Sir William Ruthven of Balerno succeeded his father. He
granted a charter to Walter Haliburton of Dirleton, which was confirmed by
Robert, Duke of Albany, the Regent, 2nd February 1407-8. Sir William was in
England as a hostage for the ransom of James I., 1424-27. He died in 1428, and
left issue, one son, John, and two daughters, one married to Walter Drummond of
Carlisle, the other to George Douglas of Leswalt.
