The seventh-century urbs regis of Dunbar (Dynbaer) (Eddius, Life
of Wilfrid, 76). Dunbar became the chief place of the comital dynasty of
Cospatric (afterwards earls of Dunbar or March) in East Lothain was almost
certainly a shire-centre in the eleventh and twelfth centuries.
