Stephen Crain was born about 1785 and married (1) Nancy "Pattie" Sparks daughter of Jeremiah Sparks, Revolutionary War patriot and (2) Mary Ragsdale. Stephen had 14 children equally divided between the two wives.
Stephan Crain, son of Joel and Rachel Crain died in September, 1859, in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, at the age of 83. The cause of death was rheumatism. The source for the death date is the 1860 Mississippi Mortality Schedule. Stephan made his will on 17 April, 1859, in Pontotoc County with Wm. Wright, J. L. Warrington, and John Shurman as witnesses.
John Shurman must have been the John Shurman who was his son-in-law. Stephen's will was probated in the January, 1860, session of the Probate Court resided over by Hon. John S. Neely, Judge of Probate Court of Pontotoc County, Mississippi. There are pages and pages of records dealing with the settlement of this will. The will and immediate proceedings were recorded in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, Probate Record Vol. 12, pp. 214 through 219.
Stephen's second wife, Mary Ragsdale Crain, claimed dower rights on the property in the West half of Section 13, Township 7 of Range One East in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Stephan Crain was enumerated in Tippah County, Mississippi, in 1840, but he was in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, in time to be enumerated there in 1850.
