Gotland is the largest island in the Baltic Sea and has population of 57,000 people. We took a bus trip to the West side of the island which is mainly fishing villages and ended going through the walled old town of Visby -- one of the original Hansiatic cities and at one time was a major stop on the trading routes.

(Visby, The Walled City)
One of the stops we made was at the Eskelhem Church -- built around the 13th Century The altar piece dates back to the 1700's and the church went through an extensive cleaning and renovation in 1993 and looks very good.

Our scenic bus ride found many poppies along the road and sometimes fields of poppies as the picture shows.

(Poppy fields)
It was a very laid-back stop compared with some of the larger cities we visited.
