We were there on a Sunday and a three day holiday weekend celebrating the start of summer -- and it was raining so I'm not sure we saw the real Helsinki.
In the morning we took a boat trip around Helsinki where the natives have their summer cottages on these many islands surrounding the city and we ended at city center at a bazaar that was open this holiday - the rest of the shops were closed. We saw lots of beautiful birch trees. The average wage was about $2700 per month for men and $2200 for women.
We had a city tour in the afternoon with a stop at the Rock Church -- which was among the more interesting things we saw in Helsinki. It's official name is the Temppeliauklon Church. It is carved out the rock - all the walls are rock - with a translucent ceiling. It includes a pipe organ -- it also has an English language service that is very well attended.
During WW II Finland allied themselves with the German Nazi's so therefore had bombing from the Russians.
