- Clark County is named in honor of philanthropist and Montana Senator William Andrews Clark (1839-1925), and the builder of the railroad line through the area. Six years after Nevada became a state, a final survey confirmed that the southern tip of the then Arizona Territory including Moapa Valley was within Lincoln County, Nevada.

- Douglas County is named in honor of Stephen A. Douglas, famous for his 1860 Presidential campaign and debates with Abraham Lincoln. The Douglas County Courthouse was built in 1916 when the county seat moved from Genoa to Minden.

Capitol history
- after its 1870 construction, Nevada's capitol building stood a lonely vigil in the center of Carson City, now an Independent city, located within Douglas county). Now, more than 130 years later, the building is still used, standing as a testament to the foresight of Nevada's founding fathers.

County history
- Esmeralda County is named for the Esmeralda Mining District, which was named by an early Nevada miner, J. M. Corey. It is believed that Corey named the district after the gypsy dancer, Esmeralda, from Victor Hugo's novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Esmeralda County has had three county seats: Aurora until 1883, Hawthorne from 1883 to 1907 and finally Goldfield. Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) wrote about his time as a miner in the Esmeralda District in his book, Roughing It.

- Eureka County is named using the Greek word, "heurka" I have found, from heuriskein to find; from the exclamation attributed to Archimedes on discovering a method for determining the purity of gold and used to express triumph on a discovery, which means "I found it". The name had been previously used for locales in California.

- Humboldt County is named for the Humboldt River which John C. Fremont named after Baron Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist, traveler and statesman. Unionville was the first county seat in 1861 until the mining boom died there and it was moved to Winnemucca on the transcontinental railroad line in 1873.
