    County history - Johnson County is named in honor of Reverend Thomas Johnson (July 11, 1802 - January 2, 1865), who was a Methodist missionary and a member of the Kansas territorial legislature. In 1829, Rev. Johnson established a mission among the Shawnee Indians about eight miles southwest of Kansas City.
