Clan... a group of people related by blood or marriage, also a Gaelic wording meaning family. A Clan is very different from a Clan Society. A Society is organized independently of the Clan. The Society functions as a cooperating branch of the Clan,
working closely with the Clan leaders to ensure accuracy in matters of research, protocol, and all things Scottish. Therefore, there can
be great differences between Clans (those who attended the Battle of Cullodean), and the Societies, Associations, etc.. which may have formed
as an adjunct to the Clan.Septs... A Scandinavian or old English root from a verb meaning "to hitch up and fold" ... Many names which are recorded as Septs have since become clans in their own right, and are therefore, branches of a clan, that for various reasons, use a different surname.
