George died of smallpox.

George enlisted as a private in Smith's 8th Cavalry, Company G, Army of Mississippi, CSA, 27 Sep 1862, Bardstown, KY. He was probably captured and given the choice of prison or joining the Union Army. He joined the Union Army in May 1863. His enlistment application data; occupation farmer, 6' 4" tall, dark hair, gray eyes, light complexion.
