Belcher Blues Newsletter
Sept. 2009

to the September 2009 issue of the Belcher Blues Newsletter.
As you probably have realized I havent put a newsletter out since December 2008.
I hope to get things started again and put out some great information for you all.
There is a few books online at American Libraries
This is a very interesting website. Other books are there as well.
Type in Belcher or other surname.
You might find a book on your family.
These can be saved on your computer.
pdf is the best one to save but you can save them as text but it is a bit jumbled.

I have had several ask what is the best way to save your research data.
I dont recommend saving it directly on your computer.
You may do so but if you get a virus or it crashes, all that typing,
photos, and documents scanned will be lost.
You can buy ancestry tree software and type it in that; but I would install that also to a usb drive not the computer. The small portable ones you can carry around. You can buy them fairly cheaply now, or to an larger portable harddrive so if your computer gets a virus or fails then you still have the information.
I use several usb drives on my computer. One for research, information, and the genealogy lines, a smaller one for the research I am working on at present, and a larger outside harddrive for all my genealogy including my ancestry tree software I installed directly to it.
I try not to keep too much paperwork anymore. When I first started, there was a tremendous amount of information I kept on paper. But I have slowly transferred text and scanned documents onto a larger portable harddrive.
There are a lot of different sizes you can buy. The one my daughter bought me for Christmas is about 100 gigs. It holds a lot but was only about $99.00. (these are getting cheaper and holds more, as many more companies make them) If you dont have the money to buy these, the Usb drives are very good at keeping quite a bit of information and can be bought at Walmart or most anywhere that sells computer things.
If you have a CD burner on your computer. After you get your lines together you might want to burn it to a cd. Photos and documents scanned can also be burned to a CD to keep.
I have also have people wanting to know how to first get started with their research and how to do good researching on and off the internet. I will try to get as much together as I can and put it in the next newsletter.
The only thing I will say about how to get started in this newsletter is start with yourself and your spouse and children.
Write it all down.
Then your parents. Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles anyone that is still alive and get as much information, documents, photos, and stories as you can from them. Put it in folders for each family if you are going to keep it in paper form.
The charts below can help in that area. You can then type it in works or word on your computer and save it.
These Charts are in PDF. Form:
Ancestral Chart
Pedigree Fan Chart
Family Record Chart
Cemetery Chart
If you are going to use the computer: transfer it to the computer or usb device, making a file for each family. Scan the images of documents and photos and keep them in the same file as each family.
There is one note here:
Even if you arent going to get the information together in genealogy form, still ask your family for anything they know and if you can copy photos and documents etc. while they are still alive. Once they are gone, much informaiton is lost. Someone in your own family down the line might be interested in getting it together.
It is also a good idea to scan your own personal photos and documents and burn them to a CD even if you are not going to use it for genealogy. It is time consuming but will always be there to Keep.
Here is also a chart to show how someone you find is related to you.
