JACQUES (JACOB) REMY 1630 FRANCE AND VIRGINIA
2...Pierre Remy born about 1632:
Married: ??
Children:
1...Abraham Remy
In "The Huguenot" Pub. #25, p. 202 (1971-73) Abraham is identified as "nephew of Jacob of Westmoreland." The Charles Mason Remey book states that Abraham/Abram came with his wife from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 to England and from England to James River, VA, on a London vessel named The Peter & Anthony. They landed near Jamestown, VA in 1700.
The VA Hist. Magazine, Vol. 11, Vestry Book of King William Parish lists Abraham Remy as a tithable person of the year 1711. He is also listed for 1712 and 1713. The article gives extensive background on the settlement of the Huguenot colony at Manakin Town in VA; the largest Huguenot settlement in America with 800 persons initially settling there in 1700. Such colonists were coveted by Virginia and special laws had been made from time to time granting unusual privileges to all who came. They were admitted to full citizenship on arrival, with right to worship God as they would, under ministers of their own selection, and later still they were granted a tract of the best land on the James River, 20 miles above Richmond, being the deserted village and lands of the Monacan Indians, exempted them from taxation and constituted their settlement King William Parish to be under their exclusive control.
The Peter & The Anthony is the second ship to dispatch colonists to Manakin Town in VA. At least four ships came to populate the settlement. Their successful settlement attracted many others and thus was gathered a population in that region the equal of any in prosperity, intellect, influence and social standing. The church service was that of the English Church, at first in the French language, later in English.
In this article, written in 1903 for the VA Hist. Magazine, it is stated that the church still stands, but the village had disappeared, "for as the Indians retired the frontier advanced; 'twas no longer dangerous to live apart, and farmers preferred to reside upon their farms. And so with lapse of time as children grew and married with Virginians--there was merger with their neighbors, and the distinctive character as a French settlement gradually waned until now but few of the founder's names are heard in the parish of King William."
"Nothing more clearly shows their high and noble nature, and their superiority, and great attainments in all that makes man great and woman loved, than the esteem and the successes attained in Virginia
Abraham appears as a landowner in Henrico County in 1715, holding 85 acres. From English Duplicates of Lost VA Records by Louis des Cognets, Jr., 1981 (Gen. Pub. Co.) In Cavaliers & Pioneers, Vol. III (by Nugent) he appears in Patent Book No. 10 with 85 acres in Henrico Co. on south side of James River, adjoining land of Jacob Florency (1715). This land was part of the last 5,000 acres surveyed for the French Refugees.
The ancient
French family of Ramey(Remy) was originally a tribe of Gaul (Northern France and
Belgium).
The family was represented in French history by Bishop Saint Remi of
Rheims (437-533), Abbot Remi of Strasbourg who died in 768, Archbishop Remi of
Rouen who died in 771, the King of the Lombards(750-800), and many other famous
people. Didier Remy of this French family was ennobled 13 Sept. 1554 and died in
1556. His son George Remy was also ennobled. George's son Jacques Remy was born
in Ivoy in the Department of Ardennes about 1545-7. Jacques Remy became a
Huguenot and was killed in Ivoy. His son Pierre Remy who was born about 1600 was
also a Huguenot and was killed. Pierre's son Jacques Remy was born about 1630 in
Picardy,Lorraine. Jacques Remy married, Francoise Haldatt, daughter of Antoine Haldat II,
Seigneur de Bonnet, and Madelaine Marchand. Jacques and Francoise fled to
England because of Huguenot persecution. Franciose was also a Huguenot. during
his childhood and after his marriage to Franciose he experienced religious
persecution by the Catholic government of france. Because he had left all his
posessions in France and could not afford passage to America ,(Jacob) Jacques
Remy, a huguenot refugee and a nobleman by birth, was brought to Virginia in
1654 by Nicholas Spencer, Esg., under the indenture system. Spencer was
appointed Secretary of the colonies of Virginia during the pleasure of King
Charles II 1606-1702. Jacob and wife fled France to England, there they found
passage as an indentured slave.
Francoise started for Virginia under indenture to John Brayton also in 1654, but
died at sea. When John Armsby died in 1661 his will stated Jacob Remy living on
the land. Jacques(Jacob) (his name was anglicized in Virginia) Remy served his
indenture in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Then he worked as a free man for
other people until he was able to become a landowner in that county in 1671, and
married Mary Spenser Miles that same year. (Possibly his masters daughter) this
land was located in the Nominee Forest in Cople Parish near the Nomini
River. Jacob died in 1721. Westmoreland deed book 3 p72. Jacob Remy is deeded 200
acres of a 1200 acre in Nominee Forest in cople Parish 7-21-1671 (probably) when
he married. Jacob was naturalized in 1680. The following is a copy of his
