EDNA POTTER

Edna was born April 9, 1911 to Mose Potter Jr and Cora Hamilton Potter. Mose was the son of James Henry Potter and Polly Jane Potter. Cora was the daughter of Ern Hamilton and Mary Jane Hunt. Edna was born on Little Beaver Creek near Elkhorn City. She had one older sister Kelsa and a younger sister Verta. She had one brother Rans.

Edna’s mother died when she was nine years old. Edna’s Grandmother Mary Jane took Verta who was eighteen months old to raise. Kelsa was thirteen and she work for families doing housework. Mom and Rans spent much of their time with Mary Jane or Great Grandmother Polly Jane Potter. Mose owned a coalmine near the Potterflats and was gone much of the time. Edna learned from a young age to be strong and independent.

She attended Little Beaver School and completed the eighth grade. Social activities were limited at that time but the school and local churches had many functions she attended. She had a mule, which got her and friends to many basket dinners and pie socials.

Mose remarried when Edna was about twelve years old. Edna always had a mischievous streak and liked practical jokes. One time she put white shoe polish in her stepmothers hair dye.

On May 4, 1927 she married James Otto Ramey. Marriage years will be in a separate section.

Edna was active in the community. In the 1960’s she belonged the Pike County Democrat Woman’s Club. They campaigned hard for Gov. Bert Combs to be elected. She also belonged to The Russell Fork Fish and Game Club Ladies Auxiliary. She was the champion fish fryer at the club. She was also active in the Elkhorn City Senior Citizens Center. She attended the center twice a week to quilt and socialize. She was a talented quilter and seamstress. She took many bus trips with the senior citizens. They traveled to Disney World, Nashville and many festivals. In 1987 she attend the Va-Ky State Fair in Wise Va. with the senior citizens. She was chosen Senior Citizen Fair Queen 1987 and presented with a rose and trophy. She enjoyed participating in the Senior Olympics. She won many metals for spin casting (fishing), fishing and walking.

In August of 1971 Edna lost her youngest son. He was killed in a mining accident due to faulty machinery. February of 1997 she lost a son-in-law, Jack Thomas. They were very close. In April of 1999 Edna suffered another loss. Her oldest son Allen died suddenly of a heart attack.

 

Edna lived an active life until winter of 1997. Until that time she lived alone caring for her own needs. She attended church every Sunday till then. Her daughter Sue cared for her the final years.

On April 9, 2000 Edna passed away in her home. She left 8 children, numerous grandchildren, many great grandchildren and lots of wonderful memories.

Edna always ended conservations with her children with this phrase

"Mom loves you a bushel and a peck and some running over".
