When studying our family genealogy, family historians discover that certain first names appear down through many generations. Family heads named their children after parents, siblings, close kin and even close friends. It was a way of honoring others with a lasting heritage. Families were at times so large that certain names were used out of necessity. However, some names were carried over from the mothers maiden name. William Thomas belcher married Tabitha Batlett on 04 August 1836 in Isle of Wright County, Virginia. The name Bartlett has proceeded down through William and Tabitha lines for several generations. Its original form has been altered to Bartley at times. On many occasions the person who inherited this name is referred to as Bartlett, Bartley and even Bart at times. He was often refered to as "Uncle Bart" by family members.
