Mr. Adams brought to Vernal a fine, artistic musical temperament coupled with a measure of training far above the average. This fine player inspired others to want to play the cornet, and the Adams' Cornet Band, made up of boys fourteen to sixty years, came into being. Ray Holdaway was the youngest and Joseph Ritter, the masterful snaredrummer from the army, the oldest. He was a real drummer, who loved his snare drum and liked to play it. His rhythmic sense and art lent snap and fire to the new band. Other members were David Manwaring, the basso; slow-spoken Helicon-blowing "Nick"-Enoch Swain-with the bass drum; robust, pink-cheeked Peter Hansen with his alto horn; William Stanley Ashton, a clear player; Erskine Curtis Hadlock, the baritone; Ray Holdaway, who later became one of Utah's finest pianists; John Merkeley, one of the first instrument purchasers; Richard Fowler, known as "Tenor Dick"; Richard Jensen, Edward Field Brian, John William Pope, Franklin Abplanalp, Luritz Sorensen, Lynn Ashton, E. H. Belcher, Ashley Bartlett, John Theodore Pope, Abner Swain, Al Swain, Marcellus B. Pope, Clarence Belcher, George Henry Bartlett, William Frederick Hansen, Harmon Mullins, and a Mr. Bell.

Charles E. Belcher, teaching school at time, age of sixteen years, has since been dependent entirely upon his own resources, his life being marked by an orderly progression that has brought him professional prominence. He is now recognized as one o the strong and successful members of the Columbus bar and as one of the active working members of the administrating party in Ohio. A native of Lawrence county, this state, He was born February 4, 1870, and is a son of Dr. John W. and Mary (Stuart) Belche. The father was a native of Kentucky but of Virginia parentage and of Revolutionary stock. The great-grandfather. George Belcher, served with General Green through the Carolinas and was wounded by a gunshot at Guilford Courthouse, He was afterward made a colonel of the colonial troops of Virginia and thus aided in the cause of independence during the Revolutionary war. The same patriotism and military spirit was manifested by the father when, during the Civil war, he joined the Twenty-third Ohio Volunteers On one occasion, while on the march, he became ill. He had previously studied medicine and being unfit for field service, He was placed in a hospital at Gal-lipolis, Ohio, at steward. When the war was ended he gave his attention to the practice of medicine in Lawrence and Gallia counties, devoting thirty years to that work, after graduating from the Miami University at Cincinnati. For some years now he has lived retired, enjoying a well earned rest in the evening of life.
