Belchers in the Civil War Website

At least 568 Belchers (both sides) served in the War Between The States as the Rebels like to refer to the war. Virginia, the center of the fighting, sent her fair share of Belchers to defend their home land against the Yankees. There were 123 Belchers (22% of total) to serve in VA units.

Following are two lists of the VA Belchers. The first is the 167 records for Belcher in the Consolidated Military Service Records (CMSR). This list provides the name and organization. it is the primary resource for ordering the soldier's service records from the VA State Archives. Note the variation in spelling for some of them.

The second list is taken from my records and provides some additional data regarding the soldier. It contains 168 records for 123 people. It will help you determine if your soldier served in more than one unit. It will be necessary to order the CMSR for both units to obtain the complete record. To really understand what the soldier did, a study of the unit history is necessary. Belchers served in 69 different VA organizations and all of them were Cofederates. The following list of units will help get a feeling for where they served. Most of these unit histories can be found in the VA Regimental History Series and almost all sell for $25.00. The Internet also has a lot of free information about some of these units.

Belchers served in 39 infantry units, 15 cavalry, 4 artillery, 2 miscellaneous units such as the CSA Navy and Chief of Staff, and 9 reserves/militia.

Casualties tells us a lot about the effects the war had on the individuals.

Killed in action (KIA) = 4. All 4 were killed within VA and at the battles of Cedar Mountain, Ream's station, and Second Manassas.

Mortally wounded = 2 Both in VA at Seven Pines and Chester Station.

Only 6 of 123 to die in combat is a quite low percentage and quite surprising.

Died of Disease = 5 One died in VA, 1 in NC and 3 unknown location. This too seems to be a low number, but follows the expected in that more men died of disease than in the hands of the enemy

Died as a prisoner of war = 0 There were 21 that became prisoners at some point in the war and were exchanged or paroled. There were 14 paroled after the Lee's surrender (mostly in June 1865). I am quite surprised that no one died while a POW.

There was only a 9% death rate with 11 of 123 to die during the four years of war. This is an amazingily low death rate. I started this section by saying that combat casualties tell us a lot about what happened. In this case the numbers may tell us more about how incomplete the records are. For the 123 soldiers there are 48 of them that the survival status is blank. Which means for about 39% I really don't know what happened. I am sure some of them did not survive. By taking the 75 with known status then the death rate become near 15% which still seems low.

Discharged for Disability = 3 Another surprisingly low number.

Deserted = 9 Two of these later enlisted in another unit. There is no doubt that the desertion numbers are low, especially in the closing days of the war when Lee's Army was deserting in mass. Two men had deserted earlier directly to the Yankees.

Paroled at Appomattox = 1 There were many survivors, if they didn't surrender with Lee, where were they. Several of the cavalry units did not surrender and broke through the enemy lines toward West VA. Some of the Belchers were finally parole in June, 1865 at Charleston, WV.

Wounded = ? This paper has practically no data on the wounded, but we know that many were. The individuaal entries in Belcher Blue, Confederate Page will show what is known.

The above two list provides quite a bit of information about VA Belchers who fought. At least it is enough to help you identify your relative and order the individual CMSR.

As discussed above there is a lot of missing data and We am sure there are many errors. Anyone with addditional or better information please pass it along to us.
It is our desire to get it right and get it complete.
