Descendants of Richard Belcher
Why Richard Belcher moved this family to Tennessee is anyone's guess. His youngest son, Richard G. moved h is family to Warren County, TN. Another son settled in Trousdale County, TN. His descents are still living in the area. My GGGGrandfather Thomas Belcher, along with others, moved his family to Logan County Kentucky. Later they moved to Bulter County. My Ggrandfather William Bulter moved his family to Warren County KY. This is were I was born and raised.

Generation No. 1
1. RICHARD1 BELCHER was born 1766 in Amelia Co. Va.. He married (1) UNKOWN. He married (2) URSULA HASTINGS January 03, 1787 in Amelia Co. VA., daughter of WILLIAM HASTINGS and SARAH.
Notes for RICHARD BELCHER:
The following information was taken from a book titled " Our Carson and Kindred Families" by, Mary Crain, 525 Alta Loma Rd., Goodlettsville, TN 37072.
Richard Belcher (Senior) came to Tennessee from Amelia Co. Virginia. The last time that he appeared on the personal property tax list of Amelia County was in 1797. The next time we find him is in 1818 when on May 2, 1818 he bought 100 acres located on Hickman Creek in Wilson County Tennessee from William Cartwright for $300. This information is found in Wilson County Deed Book G page 96. He sold this land Dec.25,1821 to James Wood for $625 and bought two tracts in Smith Co. He bought the first tract Feb. 7, 1821 on the waters of Mulheurn Creek for $600 from Joseph Allison.
NOTE: From the first statement you assume he sold his land and than later bought land in
another county. Also, I wonder about the date ( Dec. 25, 1821). The next sentence
states that he bought the first of two tract in Smith Co. on Feb 7, 1921- if so, this would
be before he sold the land in Wilson Co.
On September 17, 1825 he bought another 50 acres on the waters of Mulheurn Creek for $250 from Hiram Bruce.
In Vol. 3 page 35 of Smith County's Wills and Inventories the will of Richard Belcher is found.( For some reason his name is spelled Belshaw. Belshaw is one of the several ways that Belcher is spelled.)
In name of God Amen, I Richard Belshar of Smith County and State of Tenessee, being in a low state of health though sound of mind and disposing memory and calling to mind that it is appointed for all men to die, do make this my last Will and Testament in the manner and form as followth that is to say:
ITEM 1st: My will and desire is to sell one cherry folding table, one shotgun, one bay horse, all my flock of sheep except ten head, a suffiency of my cattle that will pay all my just debts.
ITEM 2nd: My wish and desire is to give my daughter TABEY BELSHAW, wife of ISAAC BELSHAW five dollars and to my son Isaac Belcher five dollars, and to my son SUTTON BELSHAW five dollars and my daughter REBECCA ELLIS, wife of JAMES ELLIS five dollars and to my daughter PRUDANCE ELLIS, wife of Robert ELLIS five dollars, and to my son THOMAS BELSHAW five dollars, and to my son JOHN BELSHAW five dollars and one brown mare called Nell, and one saddle and bridle and one bed and furniure.
ITEM 3rd: My wish and desire is that all my household and kitchen and all my stock of catle and sheep ant heretofore named for sale and hogs, all my plantation utensils, one grey mare all to be kept together on the planation whereon I now live for the support on my six children by my last wife -- namely: Lively, Martha, William, Ulsey, Jacob and Richard, until time that either of my above named children should marry and should want their part and then it all to be equally divided between the six above named children except that my daughter Lively is not to have any part of the grey mare or her increase.
Item 5th. My wish and desire is that one grey colt be sold and the proceeds to buy a side saddle for the use of my daughters until the last one of them should marry and then for her to have the saddle.
ITEM 6th. My wish and desire is that my son Richard BELSHAW shall have 35 acres off the tract of land whereon I now live to be taken off the east end so as to enclude the dwelling house and the whole of the balance of my land to be equally divided between my two sons WILLIAM and JACOB according to quantity and quality and last of all my wish and desire is that my confidential friend Little B Hughes, Sr. shall act as my Executor to this my last Will and Testament hereby revolking all others heretofore made. In testimony wherof I hereunto set my hand and seal this 19th day of October 1827
RICHARD BELSHAW
Signed acknowledge in athe presence of us, Vincent Simmons , jt ; John Johnson, jt.
State of Tennessee Smith County Court, November 6, 1829 -- the last Will and Testament of RICHARD BELSHAW, deceased was produced in open court and the Executor thereof duty proven by the oaths of Vicent Simmons and John Johnson Witnesses thereto and motion ordered to be recorded.
Recorded Feb. 10, 1830.
As we study his will, we wonder about many of its provisions. But then it is impossible to know what thoughts and reasons lurk in the deep recesses of someone's brain. The children conceived in his first marriage were given money, five dollars each.
The boys born to his second wife (name not known) received land. Richard, the youngest - only 21 months old at the time Richard wrote his will - received a specific amount of land, 35 acres. The balance of the land was to be equally divided between William and Jacob.
Since his second wife was not named in the will it is possible that she died giving birth to Richard.
In a book titled " Trousdale County Tennessee History" in an article written by Walter Buckingham the following is found,
" The Belcher family made the journey from Virginia to Wilson County, TN by covered wagon. The men and older children walked and helped drive and care for the live stock. The women and small children rode in the wagon. Fire was carried in an iron kettle hung on the side of the wagon. When camp was made at the end of the day fire was built from these coals. In the morning after the morning meal a fresh supply of coals were put in the kettle for that day's journey. The entire journey took almost a full month."

ISAAC2 BELCHER (RICHARD1) was born 1790, and died May 1810 in Butler County Kentucky. He married LUCY CHANDLER May 1810 in Amelia Co. VA. pg 19 Marriage Bonds in Amelia County.Notes for I
SAAC BELCHER:Born in Virgina, I would guess in Amelia County. Married Lucy Chandler in 1810. His birth date may be 1791 I have not seen any official document, but one researcher list his name as Isaac B Belcher. No clue has to what the B stands for.
The 1830 census of Wilson Co. lists a Isaac Belcher. The age matches. In the house hold there are 2 males 0 to 5, 1 M 5 to 10 and 1 M 10 to 15. Females, 1 10 to 15 and one 40 to 50. This would indicate that they had 4 sons and 1 dau. and that his wife was older.
The 1850 Census of Butler Co. Ky list a Isaac Belcher age 25 b. Tenn. Listed in the same household is another Isaac Belcher age 59 born VA. No proof, but I would assume that he is the father of the younger Isaac. Also listed is James H. age 22 and Henry M. age 15. Both were born in Tenn. I believe I am correct in assuming that they are also Isaac Sr. sons and brothers to Isaac Jr.
