      Indian Raid in Russell County


      In 1792 George Belcher was living in Russell County Virgina, when Shawnee Indians made a raid on the settlement there. a neighbor, David Musick was working in a field when the laram was raised.
      Seeing the Indians, Musick ran for his cabin and carwled underneath it. Howevere, the party of indians soon discovered him and pulled him out. They tommahawked and scalped him. Musick's wife, Anna, and their five children were taken alive.
      Wor soon spread of the indian raid and a band of whit men, including George Belcher was organized including Ephraim hatfield, and some Damron people. William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield was one of the party. They followed the Indian traila nd found them camped near present day Haysi Virginia. As it was dark, the rescue party lay and watched the indian's through the night.
      The next morning the men opened fire on the suprised Shawnee's killin one and scattering hte rest. Mrs Musick and all her children were rescued and taken home. Anna Musick and her hcildren lived for a while in George Belcher's home. Later she married of her rescuer's, Epharaim Hatfield.
