    The ever present call of the west called our ancestors to California. The lure of free land was one of the reasons they went. Still others pulled up their roots, took their families and headed there in search of jobs or quick wealth such as the gold rush. Some came by wagons, others by train, and many more by ships.
    In later years many heard the call of Hollywood and wanted to be actors and actresses.

    One of the prettiest weddings every solemnized in Ferndale occurred at 7:30 o'clock last Thursday night, when Miss Christine Berding became the wife of Mr. George A. Belcher of Eureka. The ceremony took place at the home of the bride's parents in the Cream City, Rev. Roberts of the Congregational Church officiating. The wedding was a very quiet affair, only the immediate relatives of the parties being present. The home was very tastefully decorated in honor of the event... (March 24, 1908)

    Belcher, Edward, 1848, mr of the Mary at S.F. fr. Columbia Riv. B. (Edward), 1826, lieut on the Blossom in Beechey's exped. iii. 121; in '37-9, com. of the Sulphur, and author of a Narrative of the expedition. iii. 614, 670, 699; iv. 93, 106, 142-6. B. (Lewis F.), 1847, at Mont. in company with Aram; in the gold mines '48; about '50 a large dealer in cattle. An eccentric character, native of N.Y., who acquired a large property.

    Murdered at Mont. in '56. Aram (Joseph), 1846, native of N. Y., and overl. immig. from Ill. (v. 256-30), with his family. He organized and commanded a comp. of volunteers to garrison Sta Clara and protect the families of immigrants serving in the batallion '46-7, and took part in the 'battle' of Sta Clara. v. 378-81. A firm of Aram & Belcher at Mont. is ment. in '47. A miner in '48
