      Enoch Belchers Genealogy Line

      There has been some contraversy on whether Enoch is John Wesley Belchers son or not
      Louisa is a Belcher so if he isnt then the line still holds as a Belcher line.
      2=====E-Mails about John Wesley Belcher

      I would like to find out information on the young girl Susie Campbell listed as having 2 possibly 3 children by John Wesley Belcher. One of her children was named Jasper. The reason for my intrigue is my greatgrandfather John Wesley Belcher's father was named Jasper. We have been unable to track him anywhere until finding this on your site. Our John Wesley named one of his daughters Susie (my grandmother)and the last name Campbell is listed on his death listing as his mothers maiden name.We have a strong feeling this is our Jasper Belcher as the age would also be right for him to be our John Wesley's father and the fact that Jasper's father was also John Wesley

      I put together a document regarding Enoch Belcher son of John "Westly". It has been common knowlege in my family that this is not true. That a one Booker Mullins was his father. So after researching this document is my conclusion. . I would apreciate feedback.
      Thank you , Cynthia Enoch Belcher April 17, 1856 Pike CO., KY

      .....It had been passed down orally that my 2nd Great grandfather Enoch Belchers father was not John “Wesley” Belcher b.abt. 1815. Every family member that descended thru this line has the same knowledge that this is the truth. It was said that his father was Booker Mullins. The problem was that we were unable to say for sure which Booker since all our elders who could tell us for sure have all passed on. Anna Moore his mother b. abt. 1815 in Pike CO. KY was married to and had several children with John. It was said after John had had numerous affairs that Anna had enough of him left VA and came home to Pikeville to be near her family. It was said that Enoch loved his father so much he named his firstborn son after his real father. Which he did. While growing up and hearing this story it never dawned on me that one day I would be doing genealogy and would need documentation of which Booker. But after some searching I think I have found the answer.

      Between my own deductions and the help of several cousins, I think I can safely say that the Booker Mullins I was looking for is Booker Mullins b. 1810 Pike CO., KY married to Nancy Potter. He fits the time, age, place and story perfect. So I knew from the story passed down that Booker had to have lived and stayed in the community in Pike CO. The Belcher’s and Mullins families stayed very close knit often inter-marrying. I also have two other proven lines that tie into this one also. When my Grandmother Rushie Belcher (Enoch’s granddaughter) spoke of Booker it was if everyone just knew who Booker was. Booker would have been married at the time so I’m sure that as any indiscretion in a family all this information would have been tight-lipped. The reason all of us on the Belcher side knew was it seems that Anna held Booker in high regards and wanted her son to know and keep his memory alive. Booker was killed only a few years after Enoch was born. I’m also sure after the hurt she endured with John “Westly” that it just made Booker more endeared. Which has a bit of irony for me since Booker himself was married at the time himself.

      The census records back up the times that John “Westly” had been away from Anna for some time. Anna can be found alone on the Pike CO tax list in 1854. John had himself listed with another wife in one record. Although you can find the marriage between John and Anna there is no divorce papers to be found. Also no marriage record to date for the other women in Johns life. So I personally think they never divorced. Also I was told when Enoch was born Anna didn’t list a father for him. Which is true. From what I can see in census records John was bouncing around during the birth of Anna’s children Jordan and Alexander. So I think their father’s might be in question also. I don’t know for sure. I can only speak for Enoch. From the oral history passed down in my family they only spoke of Enoch.

      I must give special Thanks! To cousin Tyra Mullins who has helped me so much! She really helped tremendously. Also a Big Thank You goes out to cousin Rick Dent.
      Although all this IS NOT PROVEN between what I know and facts I can find surrounding the story as I know it. I think it is a pretty safe assumption that Booker Mullins married to Nancy Potter is Enoch real father. Here are the facts that I have accumulated from cousins:
      1. Thanks go to cousin Rick Akers for this info:

      “ i have a birth date of apr 17, 1856 for enoch belcher. this is taken from pike county birth records. if you check the census of 1860 pike co, you will see that the booker mullins you are referring to was living just a few houses away from isaac moore, jr. isaac moore was annie belcher's brother. annie moore belcher was in perry co ky in 1850 with her husband, john wesley belcher. john left her and took up with another woman and annie went back to pike Pike Co. where they had come from. john then found yet another woman and ended up in wolfe and powell counties ky.”

      2. Thanks go to cousin Joyce Wallace for this info:

      "You have the story exactly as I believe it all happened. The Booker Mullins/Nancy Potter family lived very close to Isaac Jr. Anna also lived close by after she returned to Pike County. She was a charter member of the church which was established at Isaac Moore's house in 1872. There was no other Booker Mullins in the vicinity at that time to be the logical man. Many of Booker and Nancy's children also married into Anna's brother Aaron's family."

      Joyce also sent me this note: "Pike County Birth Records 1852-1909" by Hobbs and Picklesimer Page 55, "Enoch Belcher, born 17 April 1856, male, alive, parent - Anna Belcher." (No father was listed on his birth certificate).
