      Notes for CAPT. JOHN FREAME:

      John emigrated to VA., on "The Southampton" in 1622. Living at Jordan's Journey in Jan/Feb 1623/24, aged 16 at Muster of Jordan's Journey in Jan/Feb 1624/25. Wife Anne named in patent dated 01/Sept/1643; Charles City Order Book. Probate of the Will of Capt. John Freme granted to Mary Freme 17/Dec/1655. Hotten Original Lists of Persons of Quality; Nugent - Cavaliers and Pioneers Vol. 1.

      The "Southampton" was from the Port of London.

      p.9 Whereas mr Jo: Gibbs complained against Ca: Joffreme for an Iron chaine carries away from his ground by some of the sd Ca: ffremes people: Itt is therefore ordered the sd Ca: ffreme shall deliver and render the sd Chaine to the sd mr Gibbs and pay costs of wuite als Exec.

      p.9 To prevent the many scurrulous reproachfull and unneighborly differences and Languages betweene mr John Gibbs and Capt John ffreme the Court doth order that either of them first raysing or causeing any future quarrell rayling or difference being thereof complained and justly combined shall forfeit and pay to the other partie suffering 1500 lb tobo and cask w'th costs.

      p.16 Whereas Capt John freme undertooke paym't of 552 lb tobbo for fees Due to Howell Pryse from Mr Ingelton and Richard Ash as per testimony of the late Collect'r appeareth. Itt is therefore ordered that the sd Capt ffreme shall make good payn't of the sd sume wth costs.

      p.23 A probat is graunted to Mrs Mary freme of the last will and testam't of her late husband Ca. Jo. ffreme dec'd prouv'd in Co'rt doth hereby graunt and allow unto Mrs Mary ffreme one third of the Land of her late husband dureing her life.

      p.23 Itt is ordered that the heires of exors of Ca. John ffreme dec'd shall give assurance to m'r John Dibdall of certaine Land sold unto him by the sd Capt ffreme, and pay costs thereof, als exec.

      p.25 Itt is ordered that Mr John Dibdall minister shall w'thin 6 dayes pay to Mrs Mary ffreme ex'rx of Capt John ffreme dec'd two thousand four hundred thirty three pounds of tobo and cask Due for severall specialties w'th costs als exec.

      p.27 The Co'rt hath reversed the order graunted to Mrs Mary ffreme widd for a third of her late husbands Land, she clayming and cleaveing to the benefit of the will.

      p.31 The difference betweene Robt Letherland plt and mrs Mary ffreme deft is refferred untill the next Co'rt.

      p.38 The Co'rt doth hereby graunt and allow to mrs Mary ffreme widd the third part of all Lands and appertenances of her late husband Capt John ffreme dec', dureing her life, w'th the use of the best house thereon; The sd Lands to be divide and share by some indifferent neighbors betweene the sd widd and the deced'ts heires. [Note: Well1 I've had indifferent neighbors myself at one time and another, but would hardly have selected them to divide my property. This is a perfect example of the change in value of the English word. B. F.]

      p.40 whereas Capt John ffreme dec'd stood indebted per remainder of two bills to Wm Barker dec'ed 5 lb: 22 s: 6 d Sterl money, and twenty pare of mens shoes: Itt is therefore ordered that Mrs Mary ffreme shall forthw'th pay unto Robert Letherland who married the Admrx of the sd Barker the sd 30 pare of shoes, and the sd money in tobbo, 20/s per Cent. (Deduceing thereof 300 lb tobbo Due per Contra w'th Costs als exec).

      Know all men by these presents that I Mary ffreme Do give unto my five children 2000 wayt of neate tobbo to be pd to them when they come of age or at my decease to Arther Willm James and Jonne, and the sd tobbo to be equally Divided amongst them, and the whole stock of sheepe excepting the Ram - lambes and the wooll, and my daughter Ann to have her stock when she pleaseth out of them; I give also to my Daughter Sara a cow called old Browning and a hoope ring and a bodkin and a dutch Iron pot w'th a bayle to it, and to surrender the house and land w'ch I live in to my sonn Will' lands to have as soone as I please after my day of marriage, also I give him a testam't w'th a gilded Cover, and a small testam't w'th a cloth cov'r to my daughter Sara also I give to my sonne James a practice of piety. Deed of Gift. 3 Nov. 1652 John Freme to Arthur Lawrence, William Lawrence and James Lawrence, 300 acres, "which Land is parte of a tract of Land Containing 1198 by Pattent granted to me Septr: 1. 1643: up fflorida hundred creeke this three hundred acres of [land] Lyeth between the Crosse Creekes Mouth and the runn which comes into fflorida hundred Creeke and runneth South and by east unto the woods". signed John ffreme. Wit: Tho: Modye, Austin Younge. Recognit in Cur Aug: 3. 1654 per Johem ffreme. Test Hoel Pryse, Cl. Abstract. William Lawrence assigns his whole interest in above to Wm Panton. 20 Jan 1662/3. Knowe all men by these presents that I Wm Justice doe for me my heires and assignes affirme one noat of 300 acres of Land past by Capt John ffreme being part of a tract of 1198 acres of Land being on fflorida hundred Creeke this noat bearing date the 30th day of Novemb'r 1652 [sic] as Witness my hand this 6th Day of Decem'r Anno 1660 [sic]. I Mary Justice doe acknowledge the act and deede of my Husband Wm Justice for - - sold and conveyed by him to Mr George Potter and doe allow and approve the same to bee fully Authentick declining my whole interest in the sd land and Authorizing my friend Howell Pryse to make this my addresse and acknowledgem't to the next Co'rt for Charles Citty Com as my free act. Witnesse my hand November 11, 1662. The mark M of Mary Justice. City Co., Va., planter, sells to George Potter of Jordans par in same Co., a parcel of land, 398 acres being part of a greater tract granted to Capt John ffreme now dec'd on 1 Sept 1643" and derived to the said Justice by right of marriage w'th the daughter and heire of the said Capt: ffreme", and further patent issued to sd Justice 25 May 1661. Itt is ordered that Wm Justice be pd or secured 300 lb tobbo and cask in the first place out of the state of Wm Chamberlayne dec'd, wch sum the sd Justice obliged for to the Hono'ble Gov'nor for the sd Chamberlaynes lycence.
