Notes for HENRY I "KING OF ENGLAND":
Henry I was the third son of William the Conqueror and received a broad education, which won him the title Beauclerc. In 1100 he became king of England on the dath of his brother, William II. His reign was characterized by a return to the practices of his father's government, based on the administration of justice and enforcement of royal authority. In 1106 he defeated his elder brother Robert, duke of Normandy, at Tinchebray and annexed the duchy of Normandy to England. Allied with the houses of Blois and Anjou in France, he was in a state of continuous rivalry and conflict with Louis VI, and in 1120 forced the French king to accept him as his royal vassal for Normandy. In England, he improved the administration and employed members of the lesser nobility in the government. He developed the financial administration and centralized it by establishing the Exchequer. His legal activities are summarized in a compilation named Leges Henrice Primi (The Laws of Henry I.) In 1120 his only son-in-law, Emperor Henry V, he gave his widowed daughter, Matilda, to Geoffrey Plantagenet of Anjou, with the understanding that she would inherit him. But, at his death, a civil war broke out between Matilda and her supporters, and Stephen of Blois, who also claimed the throne.

Notes for DAVID" KING OF SCOTLAND":
The youngest son of Malcolm III and Margaret, he spent many years at court of Henry I of England, who was married to his sister. Upon the death of his brother Edgar, King of the Scots (1107), David received the southern parts of Scotland, while another brother Alexander I won the north and the crown. His possessions were increased by his marriage to Matilda (1113), who brought him the earldom of Huntington. In 1124 when Alexander died, David succeeded him as king of Scotland. His involvement in English affairs was due to his fealty oath (1127), in which he recognized Matilda as heir of Henry I. When Stephen usurped the throne in 1135, David took up arms, invaded England and fought a series of battles on Matilda's behalf. In 1136 David got Cumberland, while the earldom, and later also Northumberland (1139), were given to his son Henry. In 1141 David again fought Stephen on behalf of Matilda and her son (the future Henry II, whom David knighted in 1149); he was captured, held for a short while and escaped. Thereafter he stayed in Scotland and devoted himself to secular and ecclesiastical affairs. David furthered the process of feudalism by receiving in his service a new Anglo-Norman aristocracy which was to play a predominant role in the political and cultural history of Scotland. David was a noted ecclesiastical patron, reorganized the church according to European models, established five bishoprics and founded 12 abbeys and numerous churches. His reign is considered and epoch of greatness for Scotland.
