"according to the historic record of the town of meriden , conn. vol 2 page 2, captain andrew belcehr was a mariner, plying between boston and hartford and his name occurs frewquently in the colonial recoards and he ebidently amassed a considerable fortune in his ventures, for he finally achieved the reputation of being the most opulent merchant in new england. he was shrewd and energetic. he was one of the counsellors of mass, the selectmen of boston. in 1688 he was accused of trading with a "pyrate" for hides and elephants teeth(ne hist and gen reg vol xxvii p 239-240). on june 18, 1700 he bought from the widow gilbert her share in meriden farm., his farm was now a very large one.on oct 22, 1707 he deeded to his son, jonathan his manor farm of meriden near a place called cold spring. andrew died: oct 31 1717."

   the oliver family are among the most prominent of the early colonial families. thomas oliver came from bristol in 1632. he was one of the founders, and elder of the first church in boston.(*) his son peter born in england in 1622 and died in boston in 1670, was a prominent merchant, and commander of the ancient and honorable artillery company in 1669 and was one of the founders of the old south church. peter's son daniel married elizabeth, the daughter of andrew belcher, who was the father of governor jonathan belcher.
