Richard Potter Mary Christine (Teeny) Ramey
Surnames connected: Potter Ramey Belcher Francisco Stewart Wallace Cantrell Mullins Ratliff Salyer Childers Information came from a genealogy research paper done by Eva K. Powell August 1974 and various other sources, family records, bibles, census, vital, tax and land records. If anything here is found to be wrong please let me know. It is thought that Abraham Potter was Richard, Isaac, Benjamin and Abrahams father since he was the only other Potter in The Elkhorn City Area in 1830. Abraham was a revolutionary war soldier born in Rowan County North Carolina around 1745, lived in surry County, NC, when he entered service, served two years and six months under Captain John Armstrong and 18 months as a substitute for David Stewart. Richard Potter married Mary Christine (Teeny) Ramey, 20 Jan 1825. She was born in 1803 in Kentucky, the daughter of William Ramey born 1783 in Virginia and Anna Samlins born in 1784 in South Carolina.Richard lived in the Breaks area, built a log house, farmed, manufactured apple jack and whiskey by government license, and was known as an herb and faith doctor. The 1850 Pike County Census lists ten children living in the Potter household. Eleven children is reported in all, so by 1850 the oldest John born 1825 must have already gone from home. Richard Potter age 50 household # 215 farmer $1000 born in North Carolina Mary age 47 born in Kentucky Andrew age 22 Mary age 17 George age 16 Henry age 15 Anna age 12 Tamaree age 11 Malinda age 8 James H. age 5 Didema age 3 Noah age 5 months Moses Ramey is next door one one side at household # 214 and Easter Ramey Stewart and Abraham Stewart is on the other at # 214 William Ramey and Anna is at household # 215 parents of Teeny. David Ramey at # 214 and Benjamin Bentley and Anna Ramey Bentley at # 216. so they lived near the Teeny's family. quite possibly on the land given Teeny by her Father William Ramey since they were living in between family members, it would seem so. "2ndly- After the payment of my debts and funeral expense, I give to my eldest Daughter MARY POTTER a certain tract or parcel of land being in Pike County on Russell Fork of Sandy River, it being a part of a Survey made in the name of the Reverend James Madison of 1100 acres, beginning on a White Oak on the bank of the river, a corner to the said Survey, thence running down the river to a Double Sycamore thence & Crossing the river to the juncton of Elkhorn Creek on a cliff, thence up the _______of the ridge to the top of the ridge and with the top of the ridge or left part thereof, down to the JOHN MOOR branch, then straight to the river, thence up the river crossing the same just above Banling Rock to a Spruce fir and Sweet Gum, a corner of the said Madison Survey, and with the line of the same, 82 poles to the beginning, to have and to hold for her use and benefit her natural lifetime and after her decease to descend to her heirs of her body forever"

in 1870 Census John Potter is listed age 45 married to Elizabeth Ramey Potter, daughter of Tabitha and Moses Ramey. several Wallace children lived with John at this time. Moses Ramey lived next door to the Potters. Johns oldest son is listed as being born in Virginia in 1850 so this is probably where they were in the 1850 census why they were not listed in Pike County 1850 census. 1850 Russell County Across the river from Ky into Virginia John Potter is listed with Elizabeth, several Ramey's living in the same area. John Potter listed born in Kentucky Elizabeth listed born in Ky, two children priscilla age 2 born in Russell County Va and Mary C. age 1 born Russell County Va. Remembering that William Ramey owned a lot of land in Kentucky and into Virginia it is possible they lived on his land there. Richard Potter is listed on his tombstone at Potters Knoll as born 14 Feb, 1792 Census Records vary on his age. 1850 he is listed as age 50 1870 he is listed as age 68 but it is not uncommon to find census records off a year or so depending what month a person was born and when the census was taken. by the census he was born around 1800, but by his tombstone he was born 1792. Following the death of Teeny Ramey Potter, Richard married Polly Wallace and had no children by her. He died on 19 Dec 1886 in Buchanan Co, VA. He is buried in Breaks Interstate Park, Va. He owned all the lands that are currently in the Breaks Interstate Park. According to family stories he was buried beneath the cedar tree that he frequented during his peroids of meditation. As the marker states he is not forgotten.
