Mr. Schierts was married October 11, 1904, to Sarah M. (Calvin) Odell, widow of Bert Odell, of Kellogg, and daughter of George and Frances (Canfield) Calvin, her father being a native of Pennsylvania and her mother of Pennsylvania. The latter was one of the early school teachers in Wabasha County, and was one of the ten children of John and Margaret (Greer) Calvin (sic), natives of Pennsylvania, of Scotch descent, who settled in 1855 at what is now called Canfield Springs, in cook's Valley, Wabasha County, Minn. After the death of her first husband, George Calvin, she married, in 1876, Martin H. Tobias, of Kellogg, Wabasha County. Mrs. Sarah M. Calvin Odell, by her first husband, Mr. Odell, had two daughter, Vera M. and Bessie, the latter being now the wife of Matthew Arens. Vera M., a graduate of the Minnesota State Normal School, was a school teacher for four years, after which she entered the office of her step- father, Joseph C. Schierts, where she is now employed.
Mr.Matthew Arens was married November 7, 1916, to Bessie Odell, daughter of Bert and Margaret Odell, of Kellogg. He and his wife have one son, Matthew Odell. Mr. Arens and his family are members of the Catholic church, and he belongs also to the Knights of Columbus. He is known far and wide as a successful merchant, a good citizen and a true American
James married to Ada Alberta Odell on August 10, 1887, in Blue Earth. Ada, known as Alberta was born in Easton, Minnesota on March 9, 1967. Alberta was a petite woman with dark hair and brown eyes. She was accomplished in fine needlework creating lacy trims for her families clothes. She also baked bread with the milled samples her husband brought home from work. Alberta preferred white or bleached flour opposed to the darker “Red Dog stuff”.
Ada Alberta Odell was born at Easton, Minn., on March 9th, 1867, where she spent her girlhood days. On August 10, 1887 at Blue Darth, Minn. the deceased was united in marriage to James F. Dobson. To this union three children were born: Mrs. Pearl Penn of Elmore, Freeman who died Dec 12, 1936, and Hallet Dobson who lives at home. The family resided on a farm near Blue Earth for a number of years, but for over thirty-five years they have made their home in Elmore.
