Mississippi was originally the French settlement of Biloxi.
France controlled the area until the end of the French and Indian War in 1763, then Great Britain was in control. During the American Revolution Spain gained control, until The United States created the Mississippi territory out of what is today Alabama and Mississippi.
Mississippi gained statehood in 1817, at the same year Alabama was also created and many counties were split between the two states.
