May be the Abraham Belcher who later served in Union Home Guards. Died ca. 1875."
The 2nd VA SL was org. 12/62 and Co. G was an infantry company commanded by Capt. James Russell Cook. Home county for most of the men was Wyoming Co. and most men transferred to 45th VA Bn when the SL was disbanded in about May 1863. The entry from the roster, quoted above, is referring to the enlistment or transfer to the 45th BN because the SL had been disbanded by then..

Seven Belchers, all from KY, except Abraham and he was born there, served in four of the five VA State Lines. Two of his brothers (Ali Coon and George) served in the same SL and 45th Bn. Allen and Lewis also served in the VA State Lines and later served in the 45th BN. Parents are Bartley and Rachel Ramey Belche. Broadfoot only shows him as Abram for the 45th. HDS shows him as Abraham in the 45th, but does not show the State Line Units. The State lines were a state unit and not officially part of the Confederate Army which explains why Broadfoot does not show him. Neither is he shown in the muster roll roster for the State Line and the WV Home Guard. None of the several men to serve in the State Line are shown on the muster roster. He is shown for the 45th Btln as box 382, extraction 4 and record 2631. I have found no record to support the Union Home Guard entry. If this is so, it means that he switched sides late in the war which is highly possible for someone living in KY or WV. NFR.

HDS does not have a roster for the 2 PA HA Provisional which was in existence until it was consolidated with the 2 HA 8/64. Not sure when the Provisional unit was organized and HDS does not list the Veteran Reserve Corps. Broadfoot list him in both the 2nd HA units, but not the VRC. The muster roll roster has three entries. The name is Amos on the 2nd HA Provisional with note of co. 55 VRC and box 554, extraction 7, and record 2378. Name is Amos on the VRC with note of 2nd HA, box 636, extraction 3, and record 676. Name is Amos A. on the 2nd HA with note to 2nd Prov. HA and box554, extraction 7 and record 2377.

No details on what may have caused him to go into the Veteran Reserve Corps. This unit accepted men who were unfit for normal military duty, but could still provide useful service. A look at some of the statistics for the 2nd PA HA might give some insight. This regiment organized 1/8/62 at Camden, NJ and mustered out 1/29/66 at City Point, VA. During this period 4,705 men served in the unit, which tends to show they suffered high casualties along the way. The Officers seemed to fare rather well in that only 5 were KIA/MW and 5 DOD. For the enlisted it was another story, 221 were KIA/MW and 385 DOD. Don't have the numbers on the wounded and disabled and POWs which I am sure must have been rather high. NFR.

This Amos also creates problems, but I do believe he is a different person. Broadfoot list an Amos in the 5th PA HA and the 6th PA HA. He mustered out as a Corporal at Fort Ethan Allen, VA, 6/13/65. He was promoted to Corporal 1/1/65. During the short time of its existence, the unit seemed to have a relatively easy time regarding casualties. 1,990 men served in the unit, but 0 Officers were KIA/MW or DOD. The enlisted men lost 2 KIA/MW and only 4 DOD.
