shows him in the 25th VA
regiment of Cavalry and 27th VA Batln. as a predessor unit. data

Note: On Broadfoot and muster roll for both units. Muster roll for 25
Cav is box 382, extraction 4 and record 2659. For the staff position it is
box 818, extraction 2 and record 2163. The 25th VA was formerly the 27th
Battalion Cavalry (Partisan Rangers also knoow as the Lee's Rangers).
The HDS does not show E. L. in either of these units. It does show
Milton Belcher in the 25th VA Cav. regiment. HDS has no history for either
unit nor a roster for the 27th Batln.

        Edmond SC HOL LEG Inf C C 5/1/63 P

Note: Edmond Belcher 1st SC Inf. Reg. (Butler’s) Co. F SC Enlisted at Spartanburg Aug 2, 1862. Transferred to Holcombe Legion Co. B on May 1, 1863, in exchange for A. B. Trollinger. This data is taken from SC in CW on CD for roster of 1st SC. Landrum does not mention the above, but lists an Edward Belcher of Co. B of the Legion. I believe Edmond (b. 1838) is the son of Josiah Belcher and Scarberry Bishop (my ggg grandparents). Listed on the 1870 Census for Spartanburg as living in the Cherokee Township and age 31 (b. 1839) He was in the same company with his cousin, William L. Belcher (b. Aug. 18, 1849). On Broadfoot and Muster roll for both units . Ist Inf (box 381, extraction 2, record 3420). For the Holcombe Legion the entry states E. Belcher, "Cavalry Battalion Infantry Regiment Holcombe Legion" (box 381, extraction 2 and record 3418.

        Belcher E. (Edison)
        SC 27 Inf K C 7/64 P Tr HL
Edison SC Hol Leg C 7/64?
Note: This is one of the Belchers that is quite difficult to sort out who he is. Some background to help determine who he is or isn’t. 1) To serve in the 27k and survive, he should show service in another unit after July 1864 when that company was disbanded and the men transferred. 2) 27K was composed almost entirely of men from Spartanburg who served in Co. G, Charleston Battalion prior to September 1863. 3) No Belcher is listed in the Charleston Battalion roster. 4) In the Hagood Memoirs there is no Belcher in the 27K and no E. Belcher in any of the other companies of the 27th. 5) Broadfoot lists an E. Belcher in the 27K, and an E. Belcher in the Holcombe Legion, co. C (in addition to Edmond discussed above). 6) The Muster Roll roster lists E. Belcher in 27K (box 381, extraction 2, and number 3417) and Edison Belcher with and alternate name of E. Belcher in Holcombe Legion, no company or rank (box 381, extraction 2, and record 3419). 7) The muster roll numbers appear to be sequential and provide no clue as to relationship between names and numbers. This Edison is a new name to me and I have not identified it on any pedigree or roster.

From the above, I am certain that this person served in both the 27K and Holcombe Legion. Until the name Edison came up, I thought he might be Edward Belcher of Spartanburg. He was born 1839, Spartanburg District. Living in Cherokee area in 1870 (age 31) with his wife , Nancy (39), son George (8). I do not have a pedigree for him, but tend to believe he is in the Robert Belcher, SR., family.

There was an Edward Belcher in the Edgefield/Abbeville family (son of William Washington Belcher). While Edward is probably not the person, but he may have been from the Edgefield family rather than from Spartanburg. However, If he was from Spartanburg, he probably would have gone to Charleston with Rial Seay or Buck Bishop and served in the Charleston Battalion. Maybe he was joining initially when the 27th organized and chose to enlist in 27K because most of the men were from Spartanburg. Other men from Spartanburg were in the Legion and that might account for him transferring to that unit when 27K disbanded. Until further data is accumulated, I will just have to wonder about who he is. After thought: Maybe there was only one E. Belcher in the Hocombe Legion. Need a roster of the regiment to finally answer this question.

Note: Both these names and units are listed in Broadfoot, but neither is in the VA Archives. The muster roll lists both units and the entries refer one to the other which indicates he served in both units. For 12th (box 382, extraction 4 and record 2658) and (9th ( box 382, extraction 4 and record 2657). He served in the 12th Inf and later enlisted on 1/18/63 at Petersburg, VA as a Private in the 9th Inf. Captured and became a POW 4/1/65 at Five Forks, VA. Released 6/23/65 at Point Lookout, MD. 5’8.5", dark complexion, blue eyes and sandy hair.

        GA 20 Inf G C P
Note: Not listed in HDS roster. On Broadfoot and muster roll of box 26, extration 5 and record 83. HDS lists James who was KIA at Malvern Hill and George W. who surrendered at Appomattox. Broadfoot and muster roll lists a Jefferson who I believe to be Thomas Jefferson. Broadfoot lists a Solomon, but the muster roll doesn’t. With this type of inconsistency between sources, how is one to ever really be sure that it is right.

Belcher of box 226, extraction 27 and record 3001 (note that the initial is C on this entry). He was 40 years of age, which seems a little old to serve as a substitute. May be father of Thomas M. Broadfoot shows a Francis in the 1st VA Reserves (Farinholt’s), but no dates. and muster roll (box 382, extraction, and record 2661) spells the name Frances. Since he was in the 10th as late 12/64, I believe he went from the reserves to the cavalry. Both Broadfoot and muster roll (box 382, extraction, and record 2660) for the 10th VA Cav. Brother of Benjamin F. (age 23), Joseph R. and Thomas A. Belcher.
