JACOB BEAR was born Abt. 1695 - 1707, and died before December 07, 1769 in Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., PA.

Jacob was married to SARAH at the time his will was written. Sarah was born Abt. 1711 in Leacock, Lancaster Co., PA.

It's believed Jacob had a wife before Sarah and he's first wife (name not known) was the mother to Jacob's children.

Jacob Bear came over on the ship "Molly", which entered the port of Philadelphia on Sept. 30, 1727. He signed his name as Bahr. His brother, Samuel Bear, was also on that same ship. It is also believed that "Old" Henry Bear is possibly the brother of these two. A copy of the signature of Jacob and Samuel appeared in the Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage, October 1981, in an article by Jane Evans Best, "Three Bears of Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, And Other Early Bears".*

He married CATHERINE WORST February 22, 1775 in Lancaster Co., PA, Poss. the daughter of ANNA PFELDER. She was born June 24, 1757 in Cocalico, Lancaster Co., PA, and died November 30, 1840 in Lancaster Co., PA.

*Jane Evans Best has done extensive research on the Bar/Bear's of Switzerland, Germany and Pennsylvania. It is remarkable the details she has uncovered. She has written many articles regarding this family's line.

In the articles by Jane Evans Best in the Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage, she states she believes Jacob is a descendent of Hans Bar (b. ca. 1545 and d. before 1614) of Canton Zurich, Switzerland. However, it appears although he may be a descendant, I have not found proof as to the name of his father. In the July 1998 issue, it is believed to be Galie Bar.

  • (BA1) Hans Bar, b ca. 1570; buried July 20, 1617, Hausen. Married Anna Biedermann, b. ca 1575; buried Jan 11, 1618, Hausen.
  • (BA12) Oswald (Osli) Bar, b. before 1614; dies after 1679. Married (second wife) 1638, Elizabeth Lamprecht b. ca 1617; died between 1661 and 1662.
