Greene County Soldier dies of pneumonia at Camp Sherman.
Ray Perdue, Greene County boy is dead of pneumonia at Camp Sherman.
He is the second of the bunch of young fellows who went to camp Sherman
from this city last September 5, to pay the sacrifice of his young life
upon the alter of freedom, almost before the struggle for him had
commenced.
News of the death of the young soldier was received by his brother-in-law
and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Beekman of the Wilmington Pike, Monday
evening in a long distance telephone message from the boys father in Pike
County. The Greene County relatives did not know that he was ill and his
sister had mailed a letter to him Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Beekman left at
once for Pike County where the funeral will be held.
Private Perdue had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Beekman for more than a year, and was employed as a farm hand part of the time. He had been working with Russell Peterson on his threshing outfit before He went to camp.
