THE BELLBROOK MOON
WEDNESDAY - NOVEMBER 7, 1894
BELLBROOK, OHIO
SUGARCREEK TWP.
Rev. Ralston HOWLAND was born in Adams County, Ohio November 15, 1815, and
departed this life in Dayton, Ohio September 7, 1894 aged 78 yrs. 9mo. 22da. He
was united in marriage with Rebecca J. GILLILAND November 30, 1837, who departed
this life in great peace April 4, 1892. They were the parents of 9 children: 2
sons and 7 daughters - 3 of the daughters having preceded the parents to the
better world.
Brother HOWLAND and his wife united with the Presbyterian Church at Decatur,
Brown County, Ohio Soon after their marriage, of which they remained faithful
members until the year of 1861, when they removed to Clinton County, Ohio and
united with the Methodist Protestant Church of which they both remained
faithful, zealous members until death. Soon
after uniting with the Methodist Protestant Church, he was licensed to
preach and was subsequently ordained as a local elder. He was a useful, efficient
local minister - one of the best, it has our privilege to be associated with - -
always ready to respond to a call from the pastor for help. He was peculiarly
able in prayer, and a good preacher. He was highly appreciated by those who knew
him best, and with whom he was most intimately acquainted. Last winter he
preached a few times in his home church at Dayton with unusual power. He was
intensely interested in the progress and success of his church, although feeble
in body, yet was young in spirit. He had done a good work. His life has been one
of usefulness in the vineyard of the Lord, and he is now enjoying his reward. A
good true man has fallen, but the fragrance of his life, like the sweet perfume
of flowers, remains as a benediction to those he has left behind.
