JOHN THOMAS, 98, FORMER MAYOR OF JAMESTOWN, DEAD
Passes at Wilmington, Services There
Saturday
John S. Thomas, 98, native Greene Countian and one time mayor of Jamestown, died
at his home, 301 Columbus St. Wilmington, Wednesday at 9:40 p.m. in failing
health five months he had been bedfast seven weeks.
Mr. Thomas formerly taught in the Greene County schools and had served as school
examiner in this county. He moved to Wilmington in 1904.
The son of Jonah and Elizabeth Johnson Thomas, he was born near Jamestown April
4, 1848. After moving to Wilmington he served as a substitute teacher in the
schools there and was secretary of the Homestead Building and Loan Co.,
Wilmington, a number of years. He was a member of the Xenia I00F Lodge. Mr.
Thomas donated a portion of his personal library to the
Jamestown Branch of the Greene County District Library a few years ago.
The last members of his family of eight children, his only survivors are three
nephews and three nieces, including Mrs. Milton Ireland and Mrs. Alpha Weaver,
Xenia. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Christy Thomas whom he married December 24, 1874
died forty eight years ago.
Services will be at the Arthur Funeral Home, Wilmington, Saturday at 2 p.m., in
charge of Rev. J. L. McWilliams, Wilmington. Burial will be in Jamestown
Cemetery, where the casket will be opened at the grave. Friends may call at the
funeral home after 10:30 a.m. Friday.
