History Of Early Settlers Of Bellbrook
And The Surrounding Country
John James, the son of William and Jane James, married Nancy Whiteford,
who was born after 1780, and departed this life September 18, 1841. His consort
departed this life May 2, 1841. They had born to them 8 children, as follows:
Rachel, born November 15, 1801. She married John Berryhill. They
had born unto them 11 children. They moved to Allen County, Ohio, in the year
1836. She died August 26, 1846 and he died February 21, 1870, aged
77 years 2 months and 2 days. Evan Bain James was born November 16, 1803.
He married Sarah Sanders. They had 2 children, when he died of dropsy, on
the 25th day of January, 1831. His widow married again and moved West. David
Whiteford James was born November 3, 1805. He first married Rebecca Austin
who bore him 11 children, 8 of whom are living and 3 dead. The mother died July
10th 1850 aged 39 years 5 months and 5 days. He afterwards married Lyda Austin,
sister of his first wife. He died 1875. His wife Lyda, departed this life
August 16, 1885, age 82 years 2 months 27 days. Sarah James born April
15, 1808, married William Wilgus and bore him 4 children; Harriet, Mary
Jane, Evan, and John. John and his mother both died in August 1851 of dysentery,
within a few hours of each other. The other 3 are living. William Wilgus
died August 13, 1889, aged 79 years 3 months and 1 day. Joshua Collett James
was born March 11, 1810. He was married to Maria Burr in the year 1834.
The fruits of this union was 11 children, to wit; Isaac, Susan, Elizabeth,
Benjamin, Enock, Joseph, Morris, Thomas, ( Rena and Rane twins) and Jennie.
Joshua died April 28, 1867, leaving a widow and 11 children who are all
living; the widow residing near Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio. Lyda James
was born January 8, 1813. In the year 1839 she married Jacob Smith. She
died March 2, 1849, leaving a husband and 3 small children; Emily, William, and
James. Jacob married twice, after loosing his first wife. He is now
numbered with the dead. Catharine James was born March 9, 1816. She
married Jackson Smith in the fall of 1838. The result of the marriage was
the birth of 7 children as follows: Jonathan, John, Frank, Angeline, Nathan,
Newton, and James. Jackson departed this life March 19, 1892, aged 75 years 4
months and 4 days. Catharine, his wife, is still living, but is feeble indeed.
