George Dean 45, and his wife,
Martha, 50, proprietors of the "Bit and Bridle Cafe" Cedarville beer
parlor, were being held on open charges Saturday, Sheriff Walton Spahr announced
as the aftermath of a shooting in the cafe shortly before 8 PM Friday in which
an 18 year old wife of an army private was killed and a Cedarville man wounded
critically.
Coroner H. C. Schick reporting Mrs. Gladys Marie Edwards Reynolds died instantly
from a gunshot wound in the breast, returned a verdict of accidental death since
she was an innocent by stander. However, charges against Dean were pending as
the results of wounds suffered by Jack Thornton 47, caused by two bullets
entering his chest. He is in Springfield City Hospital.
The dead girl who was born in
Cedarville May 10, 1927 had always lived in the village. She resided with Her
mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kaiser on Cedar Street. Her husband,
Pvt. Robert Reynolds, is stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.
Fred Edwards of 665 Ross Ave., Hamilton, is her father. A report from the city
said that Hamilton Police contacted him and informed him of his daughter's
death.
Other survivors are a brother Pvt. Wilbur Edwards, who is in California and
reported to leave for over seas duty; a sister, Miss Edith Edwards of
Cedarville, and a half sister, Rebecca Kaiser of Cedarville.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Kaiser home in Cedarville with burial
at Massie Creek Cemetery.
