David J. DEVOE was born near Paintersville, Greene County, Ohio,
November 13, 1822, and died January 23, 1899 aged 76 years 3 months and 10 days.
He lived all his life in this vicinity, saw the woodman's ax convert the forest
into cultivated fields, the log cabin replaced by beautiful homes, the mud roads
and bridle paths transformed into turnpikes.
He was married to Mary ARY December 25, 1842. There were born to
them eleven children; eight survive him, and with the aged wife and mother mourn
their loss. Four sons, Joseph, William, Aaron, Jessie, of Paintersville, four
daughters, Eliza Jane BONE, of Homer ILL. Sarah A. POWERS, Lucinda JOHNSTON,
Mary E. MASON, of Paintersville. He leaves 33 grandchildren and 17 great
grandchildren.
About 45 years ago he identified himself with the M.P. Church if
this place, and while in health was an active member if its official body. For a
number of years he had poor health and had been a great sufferer. After a long
and busy life its cares have ended. May he rest in peace.
