Unknown (Cherokee) Dix

Father of George H. Dix (George Dix ?)

In the 1850 census a George Dix (age 68, occupation "Shoemaker", born in Connecticut) is living with the George H. Dix family in Dodge County, Wisconsin.  George would have been born about 1782; it is possible that he is the father of George H. Dix.  Living nearby is the family of Alvin Dix; Alvin is also possibly a son of George.  I have not yet found any later documentation for either George or Alvin.

George H. Dix

On August 1, 1849 both George and Alvin Dix submitted land warrants in Wisconsin (view images) for property in Dodge county.  They next appear in the 1850 census in Theresa township, Dodge county, Wisconsin:

By 1860 the George H. Dix family had moved to Hebron township, McHenry county, Illinois; census data is:

By 1865 the family had apparently moved to Steele county, Minnesota; Cornelia was married there on Oct 31, 1865 ( Reference).  In 1870 George and Susan were living next to their daughter Eliza who had married William Bradley; another Bradley was living next to them.  1870 census data for Meridan township, Steele county, Minnesota shows:

In 1880 George and Susan were living with the William Bradley family which had moved to Rosewood township, Chippewa county, Minnesota.  The 1880 census data is as follows:

Irving E. Dix (aka Irvin, Erving)

Two daughters, Anna and Martha, were born to this couple while they lived in Minnesota.  They then moved to the vicinity of Des Moines, Iowa where their son Nathan was born in 1878.  The 1880 census for Valley township, Polk county, Iowa (below) shows Jemima as widowed, so Irvin apparently died there around 1879.

Nathan Henry Dix

On October 7, 1900 Nathan married Anna Dorothea Sommer in Wheatland, WI.  The 1900 census shows Anna living with her parents in Brighton township, Kenosha county, WI:

Nathan took up the barber trade in Genoa Junction and moved to Salem sometime prior to 1910.  Their family is enumerated there in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses.  Nathan and Anna raised five children: Hilda, Frank, Lloyd, Lester, and Gordon.  Fishing was one of their pastimes; this interest continued on with three of their sons.  They lived in a house adjacent to Nathan's barber shop and remained there until their deaths in 1938 and 1939.
