| Notes for William DALE | ||||||||||||||||
GENERAL OVERVIEW AND GEOGRAPHY After the death of William Dale Sr. in Richmond Co., VA, in about January 1758, William's widow Frances (Phillips) Dale moved west to Bedford Co., VA, presumably bringing her children with her--the eldest of which was about 20 yrs old and the youngest about 9 yrs old. The Revolutionary War pension application of son Richard places that move in about 1766. An interesting question is why Frances would relocate to that particular area. Were there other Dales or Phillips' that preceded her to that region of the state? Apparently some of her mother's GOAD family were in the area, but this needs more research. Frances (Phillips) Dale died in Bedford Co., VA, in about July 1777 (will written 10 May 1777, proved in court 28 July 1777). Although the registers of North Farnham Parish back in Richmond Co., VA, list the births of eight children to William Sr. and Frances, in her will Frances names only three children, Richard, William (2nd), and Elizabeth. If there were other surviving children, they are not mentioned and the reason(s) for their omission cannot be discerned--all but the youngest (Richard) would have reached maturity. At least one other Dale, James, is associated with William 2nd both in Bedford Co., VA, and in Washington Co. in later records and is presumed to be son James born to William Sr. and Frances Dale in Richmond County in 1754. Those registers of North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., VA, include the births of the following additional four children of William Sr. and Frances (Phillips) Dale: Peter Dale (5 Oct 1739), Reuben (24 Jan 1740/41), Isaac/Issac (8 Sep 1747), and Frances (11 Mar 1753)1693 (see also Tom McNeill's web site for the descendants of Nicholas Dale679). I have not collected new information on any of these four siblings and cannot discuss them further. In the chronologies which are found in the Person Sheets for siblings William, Elizabeth, James, and Richard Dale, I present information which (a) associates William 2nd and James Dale in Bedford Co., VA, in 1774; (b) links William Dale of Washington Co. (TN) to Bedford Co., VA; and (c) locates William 2nd and James Dale within Washington Co. perhaps as early as 1778-1779 and no later than 1781, associating William 2nd and James closely there until the death of William 2nd in 1792, and (d) follows this same James Dale to Knox Co. (TN) in 1794 and in future Overton Co. in 1800. This sequence is important because it provides more evidence for the geographic and chronologic links of the various "Dale Hollow" Dales of Middle TN, including not only the continuation of the series of William Dales* but also my own line of Alexander Dale, that of Peggy Dale (m. Enoch Fox), and others. (* Note that both William 2nd and James each had a son named William that ended up in Overton Co., to whom I like to refer as the "first cousins of confusion".) Daughter Elizabeth Dale married twice in Bedford Co., VA, (m1. Gilbert Mason, m2. James Keenum/Keenan) but I lose her pretty quickly in the late 1700s despite the distinctive 2nd married name. This Mason family (e.g. Gilbert's parents) also had its origins in North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., VA. I have not yet attempted to follow the Mason children, of which there were seven (William, Mary Jane, Reuben, John, Susan, Rhody, and Lewis). There are several posts on the Mason GenForum regarding this family. I also present some information on son Richard Dale who married at least twice in VA, was a Revolutionary War soldier, who died in Franklin Co., VA, in 1841, and whose family, widow, and children were in the Franklin and Henry Co., VA, area until at least 1860. Tom McNeill's compilation included no family information on this Dale. |
