SCARBOROUGHÕS IN BARBOUR CO., AL: Some negative results.
At times, as much
may be gained in genealogical research by knowing what is not found in public records as what is found. It also serves as a simple reminder to
myself that I, in fact, did not fail to search these particular sources on my
research trip. Out of nothing more
than a sense of thoroughness, here I list the sources which turned up negative
for Scarborough information. All
of these items refer to official Barbour Co. records in the Clayton courthouse
unless otherwise indicated.
Administrative Records, Vol. 1, 1872-1942. No Scarborough.
Barbour Co. Births, 1891-1896. No Scarborough.
Barbour Co. Births and Deaths, 1906-1907. No Scarbrough.
Consent of Husband, Vol. 1, 1888-1899. No Scarborough.
Dower Records, 1872-1883. No Scarborough.
Oath of Office (and Bonds), 1871-1888. No Scarborough.
Orphan Records: Despite the title, this is the general series which includes all estate and probate records, whether or not there literally were ÒorphansÓ involved. I searched the indices of Vols. 1 through 48 (1835-1963). Three volumes did not have indices and I did not search through these: Vol. 3 (1847-1851), and Vols. 17-18 (1868-1871). All other volumes had at least a direct index, but less than half of the volumes had reverse or indirect indices. Moreover, the indices would not normally include names of bondsmen, witnesses, or complete lists of heirs, so undoubtedly some Scarborough records were missed. Altogether, I found records of ScarboroughÕs in only four volumes: One record in Vol. 6 (1854, see Hardy F. Scarborough), and several items in Vols. 46-48 (records from the 1950Õs regarding Silas and James Frank Scarborough).
