SCARBOROUGHS IN BARBOUR CO., ALABAMA

Compiled by Chuck Sexton

Austin, Texas

Email: ÒgcwagenÓ at Òaustin.rr.comÓ

First Draft, 13 February 2005

Revised, 16 April 2005

Extracted from Research Vol. 10, January 2005

Supplemented by Federal Census data and

various online descendancies and discussions.

This page contains the ÒgristÓ of about 140 pages of notes gleaned from official public records and other sources during a research trip in January 2005 to Barbour (and Russell) County in Alabama.  A separate research summary is available for Russell County.  (There is relatively little overlap in the array of ScarboroughÕs in the two counties.)  I visited both courthouses (Clayton and Eufaula) in Barbour County and spent time in two public libraries (Town & County Library in Clayton; Carnegie Library, Eufaula) looking through their genealogy materials.  The present summary should be considered simply a guide to the data in the cited research notebook.  I provide key dates, names, and references here but my notebook contains, in many cases, more detail such as complete descriptions of tracts of lands, abstracts of petitions and wills, etc.  The present summary only addresses the Barbour County data, with just brief reference to related Russell County information.  I intersperse Federal Census data here to add some context but this is not meant to be an exhaustive listing of that data.

Individual ScarboroughÕs are alphabetized by given name.  The immediate relationship (family and spouse, if known) is indicated.  Records for in-law spouses are combined with the Scarborough spouse.  I gleaned data on the surnames ÒScarboroughÓ, ÒScarbroughÓ, and all obvious variations.  Since I have no known African-American heritage in my Scarborough line, official records of ScarboroughÕs that were identified as such were not transcribed; some of the ScarboroughÕs of unknown association in the notes below may be of African-American descent.

All records are listed chronologically for each individual or couple.  In order to have a complete chronology for each person,  records pertaining to more than one Scarborough are repeated under each individual.  For every record, I list the original source.  In most cases this is the official courthouse record; in a handful of cases the data was taken from a secondary source such as the ÒHeritage of Barbour CountyÓ, one of Helen S. FoleyÕs published compilations, or a descendancy posted online.  For my own convenience, I also list my journal page number(s) in parentheses at the end of each citation; all refer to my Genealogy Research Vol. 10.  Where I reference Federal census data, I have examined the data on microfilm or via Ancestry.comÕs Census Images Online.

Since about the 1880Õs or 1900 or 1930 (depending on who you ask), separate series of official records have been maintained at the two courthouses in Barbour County (Clayton and Eufaula ÒDivisionsÓ).  Unfortunately, the volumes containing records prior to that era--all recorded originally at Clayton--have been divided up between the two courthouses.  The division of those older Barbour County records and their indices between the two courthouses is a source of confusion and frustration.  Unless annotated with ÒEufaula DivisionÓ or Ò(BCE)Ó, all the official records and volumes cited here are from the pre-division or Clayton Division series and are located at the (original) Barbour Co. Courthouse in Clayton.  Abbreviations for locations are:  BCC = Barbour County Courthouse in Clayton; BCE = Barbour County Courthouse, Eufaula Division; TCL = Town and County Library, Clayton; CLE = Carnegie Library, Eufaula.  I searched from the oldest volumes available and well into the 20th Century but did not extract data from recent decades--I simply did not know who I was looking for in recent times!  I have a list of all the records, indices, and other references that I searched in Barbour County at these locations; that list is available upon request.  Here are the date limits of the major record series I searched:

         At Clayton Division:

Marriage Records Vol. 4-20, 1844-1928, plus Direct (Groom) Index through 1939

Note: Marriage Records Vol. 1-3 are missing.

Births (and Deaths, in some volumes) 1891-1899, 1906-1907, 1907-1923 (no entries between 1908 and 1922), 1918-1919

Cemetery Records (at TCL and CLE) which appear to have been compiled in the mid-1960Õs

Index to Estates, Wills, Petitions, Adoptions, Bonds, 1833-1927

Indices to Papers (continuation of the previous index), Vol. 2-3, 1927-1989

         Administrators Record, Vol. 1, 1872-1942

Official Bond Records, Vols. 1-4, 1845-1941

Indices of Conveyances of Real Estate (later entitled ÒDeedsÓ or ÒMortgages & DeedsÓ), Vol. 1-5 (which cover Conveyance Books A-Z and 1-18, Mortgage Books 1 to 104, and Deed Books A to U, 1833-1923+)

Orphan Records, Vols. 1-48 (1833-1963) Note the Indices to Papers (above) go through 1989.

         Miscellaneous Records, Vol. 1-3, 1898-1966

         At Eufaula Division:

General Index [to Conveyances, Deeds, etc.], at Eufaula Division, Vol. 1-3, 1877-1926

Note: It is unclear from the indices or location of volumes when the records were split between Clayton and Eufaula--very confusing.

As can be expected, ScarboroughÕs are not found in all public records or volumes.  You may examine my list of negative search results to see which records and other secondary sourceds lacked Scarborough information for Barbour County.

I did relatively little research on cemeteries in Barbour County during my research trip.  Here is a list of the relative few ScarboroughÕs in Barbour County cemeteries.

As aids to the main body of information, I created an index to families and individuals associated with ScarboroughÕs in the public records.  Use this list of ÒAssociated NamesÓ as a cross-reference to grantors, grantees, witnesses, heirs, in-laws, etc.

I also offer a set of Appendices showing descendancies for most of the major Scarborough lines encountered in the Barbour County data.  I mention this later but it bears repeating here:  These descendancies are for convenience only and should not be taken as definitive.

Acknowledgements.  As for many of us, Jewell ScarboroughÕs ÒSouthern Kith & KinÓ provided an important early compilation of Scarborough information for me.  I am grateful to the following additional researchers for information derived from their online postings, as well as direct exchange of information and feedback on all these ScarboroughÕs:  Jean Blackmon, Joyce Harrison, T. D. Hudson, Bill Huggins, Ken Jones, Cynthia McDaniel, Linda Nelson, Bill Page, Dianna Rogers, Pat Scott, Sue Wilkerson, and Tascar Williams.  Cynthia McDanielÕs many descendancies posted on the Scarborough GenForum have been invaluable.  For the complete given and middle names of the Ichabod Scarborough lineage, I have drawn extensively from Jan AllisonÕs ÒFamilies of the Deep SouthÓ family tree on Ancestry.com (updated 18 Jan 2005).  However, I take full credit/blame for any errors in the present compilation.  Since these are, almost without exception, all public records, these data may be incorporated at will into legitimate genealogical research.  Please feel free to share this data with other Scarborough or Barbour County researchers.  Extensive extractions or quotations of my remarks should be accompanied by attribution to the present source.

Questions, comments, additions, and corrections would be much appreciated.

AVEN SCARBROUGH Jr., son of Aven Scarbrough Sr.

    Miley MATHEWS, wife

Note:  My primary research focus has been the descendants of Aven (Jr.) and Miley (Mathews) Scarbrough.   This family came out of Georgia and was enumerated in Russell County in the 1860 Fed Census.  It is not clear that Aven ever lived in Barbour County, but he enlisted at Eufaula in April 1862.  He did not survive the war.  His widow and several children are found in Barbour Co. in 1870 and later.  One of the daughters, Elizabeth Rebecca Scarbrough (q.v.) married into the GriffinÕs and is the only member of this family prominent in public records in Barbour County.  Much of my information on this family comes from Federal Census records and little of it (other than Elizabeth) from official county records.

            1860 Fed Census: Russell Co., p. 28, Watoola Beat 9: ÒAenÓ Scarbrough with wife ÒMilaÓ and 7 children:  L. R. (18, female, b. GA)[= Elizabeth Rebecca], W. A. (14, male GA)[= William], M. J. (12, female GA)[= Martha Jane], J. N. (9, male GA)[= James N.], M. E. (7, female, b. AL)[= Mary E.], M. F. (5, female AL)[= Marilla? F.], L. G. M. (1/12, female AL)[= Laura].  Note the move from GA to AL between 1851 and 1853.

5 April 1862, Aven enlisted in CSA in Eufaula, Barbour Co.; he was mustered in at Opelika, Lee Co., on 15 May 1862 when Co. F, 39th Alabama Infantry was organized. (Compiled Service Rec. of Confederate Soldiers, Alabama; National Archives Rec. Group M311 Roll 380; examined at NARA, Nov 2004)

15 May 1864, Aven wounded at Battle of Resaca, GA (Alabama Dept. of Archives and History, Compiled Service Records of CSA volunteers)

11 Jun 1864, Aven died of Òwounds and sicknessÓ (location unknown; burial location unknown)  (Alabama Dept. of Archives and History, Compiled Service Records of CSA Volunteers)

1870 Fed Census: Widow Miley Scarbrough and six of her children can be accounted for in the Eufaula area.  She is enumerated as ÒMima ScarbroughÓ and has only her 11-yr-old daughter Laura with her.  However, in the same and nearby townships, there are several ÒunassociatedÓ Scarbrough children living in other households.  A comparison with the 1850 and 1860 Fed Censuses and an analysis of all the Scarboroughs in Barbour County in 1870 makes it apparent that Miley had sent her older children into other households, some of them to live with married siblings, and some of them taken in by families of returning CSA veterans of the 39th Alabama Infantry, perhaps to work on farms or as domestic servants.  By collecting the names, ages, and information on these unattached Scarborough children in the county, I have reconstructed MileyÕs family at that time, as follows:

                           Name                                     Birth                                                                                       Location in Census

(from Census)          Age    State      Household                                                             & Post Office

                           Mima                         51       GA          head (#790/837)                                                  T10 R28, Eufaula

William                     24       GA          Thomas GRIFFIN (#846/897)*                       T10 R28, White Oak Spgs

Jane                            21       AL          Fabian and Francis ADAMS (#244/256)      T9 R27, Lawrenceville**

                           James                         20       AL          head (#1019/1063)***                                     T11 R28, Eufaula

                           Mary                          17       AL          John & Mary E. ADAMS (#765/810)            T10 R28, Eufaula

                           Rilla                           15       AL          James & Mary FLOYD (#789/836)                T10 R28, Eufaula

Laura                          11       AL          at home with Mima (see above)                      T10 R28, Eufaula

                       *  Wife of Thomas A. Griffin is Elizabeth Rebecca SCARBROUGH, daughter of Aven Jr. & Miley.

**  Actual locatiion of residence known to be in the AdamÕs Chapel area s.w. of Baker Hill (Adams, 1981).

***  With wife Louisa and children Henry (3) and Cora (7/12).

Note that three of the five children living in other households are in the same township (T10 R28) as Mima and Laura.  Each of the other two is in an adjacent township (James and his family in T11 R28; Jane in T9 R27) and thus was living no more than about 10 to 12 miles from ÒMimaÓ.  (Each township is a square, 6 miles on a side.)  Fabian and John ADAMS are brothers (L. H. Adams Jr. (ed), 1981, ÒHistory of the Adams FamilyÓ, Paragon Press, Montgomery, Ala.).

Note: I have found no record of Miley (Mathews) Scarbrough after the 1870 Fed Census.

C. CAYCE SCARBOROUGH, daughter of Aaron Jasper Scarborough

11 Dec 1907, birth of female child, Beat 12; Nancy Scarborough (mother, b. AL), A. Scarbrough [sic] (father, farmer, b. AL), by B. F. BENNETT.  Cert. (1907) No. 15. (Barbour Co. Births and Deaths, 1907-1913) (77) Note: This is apparently C. Cayce Scarborough (fide Jan AllisonÕs family tree).

CHARLES A. SCARBOROUGH, son of Hardy Franklin Scarborough

    Maggie Lorene STANDIFER, wife

            1 May 1884, C. A. Scarbrough m. Miss Maggie STANDIFER at residence of W. R. STANDIFER; bond A. S. BORDERS, G. T. [= brother George F.] SCARBROUGH [sic[ (Marriage Rec. Bk 9:388) (21)

            16 Nov 1889, along with a long list of heirs of Hardy Scarborough, C. A. and Maggie Scarborough co-sold land in S36 T11 R24 to J. H. PEACH. (see M. C. Scarborough)  (Deed Bk C:171) (59)

CHARLES PHILLIPS SCARBOROUGH Jr., son of Charles Phillips Scarborough, grandson of James E. Scarborough

Marie McRAE, wife [ = Mary F. ?, see below]

28 Sep 1924, Charles P. Scarborough m. Marie McRAE at home of P. D. McRae. (Marriage Rec. Bk 19:497) (26)  Note: This couple is found in Tallapoosa Co. in 1930 Fed Census.  The couple is also mentioned in ÒThe Heritage of Barbour Co.Ó along with a family history of C. P. S. (2001, p. 534, 614-615)

Note: It was not clear if the following probate records refer to Marie McRae Scarborough or a second wife of Charles Phillip Scarborough Jr.

23 Dec 1981, Will of Mary F. Scarborough, wife of C. P. Scarborough.  Gives to son William F. Scarborough, 1 ac in S19 T9 R25, deed received 14 Oct 1963 by C. P. and Mary F. Scarborough from Raymond DYKES and Vivian Dykes. (Probate Ct. Rec. C8:27-28) (74)

CLARENCE SCARBROUGH

    Minnie CHAMBLESS, wife

23 Jan 1900, Clarence Scarbrough m. Minnie CHAMBLISS [sic] at Eufaula. (Marriage Rec. Bk 14:261) (25)

Note: Minnie (b. Sep 1880, GA) is enumerated (as a Chambless, not as a Scarbrough) in the household of Eliza & Mattie CHAMBLESS in the 1900 Fed Census taken in June.

CORA E. (PITTS) SCARBOROUGH, wife of Roy E. Scarborough (q.v.)

DANIEL SCARBOROUGH

    Emma HOLLAND, wife

18 May 1890, Daniel Scarborough m. Emma HOLLAND at res. of James Holland. (Marriage Rec. Bk 11:504) (24) Note: I cannot find this couple in the 1900 Fed Census of Barbour Co.; that census indicates that James Holland is black.

Note: The following record may or may not apply to the above Daniel:

22 Jan 1898, Dan SCARBROUGH and John GLASS sold 40 ac in S4 T11 R26, to D. L. EDWARDS; witnesses, W. H. PRUETT, J. G. PRUETT. (Deed Bk E:889) (66)  Note: W. H. Pruett is Barbour Co., Judge of Probate.

DAVID SCARBOROUGH

Note: The association of this David Scarborough is unknown.  There is a David M. Scarborough, son of David and Comfort Scarborough who is documented in a few records in adjacent Russell Co. during the period 1839-1840 just before he died (see next entry).  His estate papers are on file in Russell Co.  There is only one David Scarborough is in Barbour County for the 1833 Alabama State Census and again on the 1840 Federal Census for Russell Co.  However, two of the records below postdate the death of David M. Scarborough.

21 Nov 1838, David Scarbrough [sic] requested a plat of 142+ acres in S30 T10 R26 [s.w. of Clayton]; the survey was done by John W. MARTON, County Surveyor, and recorded 28 Nov 1838 (Conv. Rec. B:389) (51) Note that this record does not necessarily indicate he resided in the county.  Note also that this is the same township (T10 R26) in which Nathaniel ROACH reportedly owned land; see next paragraph on David M. Scarborough.

16 Jan 1844, John H. MILLER and Ann C. Miller sold 73+ acres in S30 T10 R26 to Josiah SMITH; witnesses, William T. SHANKS, David Scarborough. (Conv. Rec. F:115) (52)

20 Mar 1847, John H. MILLER and Ann C. Miller (signed Caroline Miller), his wife, sold a 4 acre lot for church houses in S30 T10 R26, to the Methodist Episcopal Church South for $1.  Sold to the trustees of said church: David Scarborough, James R. NORTON, William V. NORTON, William BOUNDS, and J. S. BOUNDS; witnesses Thomas P. GRIMES, Perry C. SMITH. Recorded 14 Nov 1866. (Conv. Rec. S:59) (55)

DAVID M. SCARBOROUGH, son of David & Comfort Scarborough

    Nancy Unk. [PERRY?], wife

about 1808, Nancy (Scarborough), b. GA. (Godfrey, Marie H.  1990.  Rural Land Owners of Barbour Co., Alabama, 1851, So. Hist. Press.; examined at TCL) (78)

1833, State Census for Alabama, Barbour Co.  David Scarborought [sic] enumerated as 1 male over 21, 1 female over 21 (presumably Nancy), and 2 females under 21, no slaves. (Foley, Helen S.  1976.  1833 State Census for Barbour Co., Alabama, So. Hist. Press) (TCL) (78)  Note: Researchers have assumed that the 1833 occurrence refered to this David M. Scarborough.  Given the data in the previous paragraph, I think the question of whether there were one or two David ScarboroughÕs in the area at the time still needs further investigation.

24 Dec 1843, Mrs. Nancy Scarborough m. Nathaniel ROACH.  He had land in S33 T10 R26 [near MillerÕs Ford]; They moved to Russell Co. (Godfrey, Marie H.  1990.  Rural Land Owners of Barbour Co., Alabama, 1851, So. Hist. Press.) (TCL) (78)

There is this curious note in Helen FoleyÕs 1976 compilation of ÒObituaries from Barbour Co., Alabama, Newspapers, 1890-1905Ó:  ÒMrs. D. M. Scarborough, mother of Edward P. BLAIR, lives in Louisiana.Ò  This is unlikely to be the widow Nancy Scarborough, who married Nathaniel Roach. (CLE) (82)

EFFIE MAE SCARBOROUGH, daughter of James Franklin Scarborough

    Jack WISE, husband

10 Aug 1956 (following the death of mother Nettie), Petition and list of heirs (all over 21): Ruby S. WELLS (daughter, Ozark, AL), Ester S. PORTER (daughter, Abbeville, AL), Effie Mae WISE (Dothan, AL), R. E. [=Roy E.] Scarborough (Ft. Walton Beach, FL), A. F. Scarborought [sic = Albert F., Skipperville, AL), Ozie Scarborough (Dothan, AL), L. R. Scarborough (= Lee R., Hope Hull, AL), Mrs. C. C. ÒWILKERSONÓ (= Wilkinson = Alma Margaret F. Scarborough; Clio, AL), J. E. Scarborough (= James E. Scarborough, Lock Hart, AL), Mrs. E. R. MURPHEE (= Elma R. Scarborough, Prattville, AL) (Orphan Rec. 47:99) (15)

ELIZABETH REBECCA SCARBROUGH, daughter of Aven Scarbrough Jr.

    Thomas Absolom GRIFFIN, husband

Note:  My primary research focus was on the descendants of Aven (Jr.) and Miley (Mathews) Scarbrough.   One of their daughters, Elizabeth Rebecca Scarbrough married into the GriffinÕs and is the only member of that Scarbrough line prominent in public records in Barbour County.  I have dozens of individual records on Thomas & Elizabeth Griffin; key items are listed below.

29 Apr 1839, Thomas Absolom GRIFFIN born in Houston Co., GA (Census of Confederate Soldiers in Alabama, 1907, Barbour Co., p. 29)  Note: This reference is the only place I have found his birthdate, birthplace, and full middle name, although the birth year conflicts with some census and cemetery records.  The census was presumably made in the form of first-hand interviews with the veterans, so I tend to put weight on the information contained therein--to the extent that memories were correct.  There are 218 veteran entries in this important compilation.

1860 Fed Census: Russell Co., Beat 9, Watoola, p. 28, #204/203; 18-yr-old ÒL. R.Ó in household of ÒAenÓ and ÒMilaÓ Scarbrough with 6 siblings.

23 Feb 1861, Thomas A. Griffin m. Rebecca Scarbrough in Russell Co., bond Franklin W. SIMS. (Russell Co. Marriage Bk 3:473) (105)

March 1862, Thomas A. Griffin enlisted in CSA at Eufaula in Co. F or K (may have served in both companies during course of the Civil War); paroled in 1865 at the end of the war in Greensboro, NC. (Census of Confed. Soldiers in Alabama, 1907, p. 29; and compiled service record from Alabama Dept. of Archives and History at http://www.archives.state.al.us/civilwar/soldier.cfm)

1870 Fed Census: Thomas and Rebecca Griffin are enumerated in T10 R28, White Oak Springs Post Office, Barbour Co., AL.  In 1870, along with four of their own children, they had 24-yr-old William Scarborough [sic], RebeccaÕs younger brother, in their household.  They were one of four families that harbored some of ElizabethÕs siblings, children of Aven SCARBROUGH Jr. who was killed in the Civil War.

28 Jul 1874, Thomas A. Griffin bought land in S8 T10 R28.  By 17 Jan 1879, he had bought other land in S10 T10 R28 Òwhere I currently resideÓ.  The couple bought and sold various parcels in T10 R28 up to at least 1910.  There are many promissory notes and mortgages issued for loans to make crops during the period 1876 to at least 1887.  Except for a transaction with their daughter Georgia Ann (see below), they sold off the last of the rural lands in 1890-1897 and apparently bought a house in the city of Eufaula.  These real estate transactions are in various volumes of Conveyance Records, Deed Records, and Mortgage Books in both Clayton and Eufaula Divisions.  I have complete citations available.

1900 and 1910 Fed Censuses: Thomas A. and Elizabeth R. Griffin are enumerated in the city of Eufaula.

30 Mar 1906, daughter Georgia Ann Griffin sold 20 ac to Thomas A. Griffin; four years later (14 Mar 1910) Thomas and Elizabeth Griffin sold this land to W. C. BRANNON and Georgia A. Griffin sold her remaining 20 ac to the same man on 23 Apr 1910.

Jan 1914, Thomas A. Griffin died in Barbour Co., AL (Barbour Co. Cemetery Records, TCL and CLE; Epworth Cemetery, site visit, Jan. 2005) (101)  Note: The typed cemetery lists at the libraries show a ÒTommie GriffinÓ who died in 1913, but the headstone at the Epworth Cemetery, a fairly recent one of the official type for CSA veterans, indicates the death date of January 1914.

14 Apr 1916, Elizabeth Griffin, on pension list for Confederate veterans, Class 1, Warrant No. 232 (Barbour Co. Pension Record 1916 [-1921], p. 8) (9)

1 Oct 1916, Elizabeth Griffin, on pension list for Confederate veterans, Class 1, Warrant No. 232, address in Baker Hill

ca 1918, Elizabeth Griffin died, buried at Epworth Cemetery, near Eufaula. (Epworth Cem., site visit, Jan 2005)  Note: The typed cemetery records in the libraries show an ÒElizabeth H. GriffinÓ who died 5 Feb 1912.  Based on the placement in those lists and at the cemetery itself, it is believed that this refers to the wife of Thomas A. Griffin, but the year of death is clearly in error.  Unfortunately, the headstone at the cemetery is now mostly obliterated, but it does appear to read ÒElizabeth R. GriffinÓ.

2 Aug 1920, the pension record volume lists a return for Mrs. Elizabeth Griffin, Warrant No. 9036, Clayton R. F. D., Òuncalled for - Rect - retÕd Aug 2ndÓ, implying that she is deceased. (Pension Records 1916 [-1921], p. 32, 52) (10)  Note: There is no listing for Elizabeth Griffin for 1918 in these same pension records and no annotation as to her status.

(CLE) (82)

GEORGE F./T. SCARBOROUGH, son of Hardy Franklin Scarborough

    Emma Carter HIGHTOWER, wife

Note: The middle initial is hard to distinguish on some records.  I believe ÒF.Ó is correct.  I donÕt believe there are two separate individuals, George T. and George F.

3 Aug 1876, George F. Scarborough m. Emma C. HIGHTOWER, at Mr. HightowerÕs (Marriage Rec. Bk 6:471) (22)

HARDY FRANKLIN SCARBOROUGH, kinsman of Noah and James A. Scarborough (m. Mary Ann BRYAN)

    Malvina C. BRYAN, wife

10 Nov 1854, Francis Scarborough,  over age 14, minor heir of Noah Scarborough, voluntarily nominated [her brother] Hardy F. Scarborough  as her guardian.  Bond by H. F. S., John F. FISHER, and Ed E. GLOVER. (Orphan Record 6:176-177) (3, 43; original estate papers are in Box 27 at courthouse in Eufaula--just two pieces of paper)   Note: This record is also mentioned by Helen Foley in her 1976 ÒAbstracts of Wills and Estates, Orphan Court Records, Books V & VI, 1852-1856Ó. (CLE) (82)

22 Apr 1857, Hardy F. Scarborough (spelled ÒHartlyÓ once in document) bought 100 ac on Cowikee Creek from John F. BRYAN and wife Margaret An BRYAN in S11 T12 R28 for $375; witness William H. BRYAN. (Deed Rec. Bk N:479) (32)

            18 Aug 1857, Marion CLARK and Elizabeth Q. Clark signed a promissory note to Hardy F. Scarborough, for $729 to buy 100 ac in S11 T12 R28; witnesses E. C. BULLOCK, G. B. MATHIS.  The note was marked Òsatisfyed in fullÓ 15 May 1858, H. F. S. (Deed Rec. Bk O:63) (33)

18 Aug 1857, same transaction; lists sellers as Hardy F. and Malvina C. Scarborough, his wife. (Conv. Rec. O:286) (52)

3 Nov 1858, Hardy F. Scarborough bought land in S30 T12 R25 [near Mt. Andrew] from Necy LEWIS and wife Rebecca Lewis; witness, J. C. WHITE; certified by James A. Scarborough, Justice of the Peace (Conveyance Rec. O:618) (50)

5 Dec 1859, Hardy F. Scarborough and wife Malvina C. Scarborough sold land in S30 T12 R25 to Henry FARRIOR; witness W. H. BRYAN, executed in presence of James A. Scarborough, J.P. (Conv. Rec. P:535) (53)

[1864: Hardy F. Scarborough died in Savannah, GA, while serving with the CSA; fide Dianna Rogers]

From 1871 to 1889, there are several records involving promissory notes and land transactions of an M. C. Scarb(o)rough believed to be Malvina C. Scarborough, widow of Hardy F. Scarborough.  Three of these involve ÒM. C. Scarborough and C. A. ScarboroughÓ, the latter assumed to be her son Charles A. Scarborough.  I did not examine all of the records that appeared to be promissory notes; their index entries are listed below.  However, one index entry is confusing: It lists ÒM. C. Scarborough & wife, C. A. ScarboroughÓ (1 Jan 1878; Conv. Rec. 9:587).  That record needs to be examined to clarify the entry.

            24 Jan 1871, Promissory Note from M. C. Scarborough to M. F. FIELD for $150, due 1 Nov 1871, secured by crops and a horse.  Witnesses, W. H. P. BRYAN, L. H. GURNER. (Conv. Rec. W:323) (57)

30 Apr 1875, Mortgage to secure a loan for $100 to make a crop, from M. C. Scarborough to Charles Newman Co., secured by crop, etc., and property: 80 ac in S36 T11 R24; witnesses, H. P. BRYAN, John F. BRYAN. (Conv. Rec. 3:352) (58, 64)

22 May 1876, Mortgage (probably an indenture to make a crop) from M. C. Scarborough to W. H. Parish Co. (Conv. Rec. 6:501) (58)

27 Feb 1877, Mortgage (probably an indenture to make a crop) from M. C. and C. A. Scarborough to Julia TURNER. (Conv. Rec. 9:77) (58)

1 Jan 1878, Mortgage (probably an indenture to make a crop)  from ÒM. C. and wife C. A. ScarboroughÓ [sic, as indexed] to C. P. S. DANIEL. (Conv. Rec. 9:587)  This may actually refer to M. C. Scarborough, C. A. Scarborough and his wife.

11 Mar 1879, Mortgage (probably an indenture to make a crop)  from M. C. Scarborough to V. J. Lewis Co. (Conv. Rec. 13:604) (58)

19 Jan 1887, Mortgage from M. C. Scarbrough [sic] to J. H. PEACH. (Mortgage Bk 10:363; location of original book unknown--Clayton or Eufaula?) (58)

            19 Jan 1887, Mortgage from M. C. Scarborough and C. A. Scarborough to J. H. PEACH. (Mortgage Bk 10:566; location of original book unknown--Clayton or Eufaula?) (58)

            16 Nov 1889, Several heirs of Hardy F. Scarborough were co-sellers of land in S36 T11 R24, sold to J. H. PEACH. (Deed Bk C:171) (59):

M. C. Scarborough [= Malvina C., widow of Hardy F.]

George T. Scarborough [son of Hardy F.], Emma C. Scarborough, wife of George T. S.

M. L. Scarborough [= Mary L., daughter of Hardy F.]

C. A. Scarborough [= Charles A., son of Hardy F.], Maggie Scarborough, wife of C. A. S.

J. O. Baxley, Olza L. V. Baxley [presumably a Scarborough?], wife of J. O. B.

HENRY C. SCARBROUGH, prob. son of James N. Scarbrough, grandson of Aven Scarbrough Jr.

    Emma Lee JONES, wife

Note: The birth year from cemetery records matches the known age of a grandson of Aven Jr. (see James N. & Louisa Scarbrough) but other than having the same first name, birth year, and living in Barbour Co., I have no other confirmation that this is the Henry Scarbrough in AvenÕs lineage.  None of the associated families here (Jones, Skinner, etc.) have known links to other members of AvenÕs family.  Of potential confusion is Henry Columbus Scarborough (b. 1881) son of James Noah Scarborough (b. 1850) (q.v.) and grandson of George W. Scarborough, but IÕm not certain of Henry ColumbusÕs location during the late 19th and early 20th Century.

20 Nov 1867, Henry C. Scarbrough born in AL. (Barbour Co. Cemetery Records;  TCL, CLE) (84)

            1870 Fed Census: AL, Barbour Co., T11 R28, Eufaula P.O., #1019/1063.  James Scarborough (20) , wife Louisa (26), son Henry (3), daughter Cora (7/12).

10 Oct 1870, Emma Lee Jones born in AL. Compare with 1880 and 1900 Fed Censuses. (Barbour Co. Cemetery Records;  TCL, CLE) (84)

1880 Fed Census: Barbour Co., Cotton Hill, ED 23, p. 349A; Henry Scarbrough is a 13-yr-old servant in household #119/119 of James M. FLOYD (60, b. TN SC MD) with his wife (?) Mary E. (30, AL) and son Horace G. [Floyd?] (6, AL).

1880 Fed Census: Barbour Co., ED 17, Beat 6, Williamson; Emma L. Jones is 19 yrs old in household #34/34 of mother Susie JONES (62, b. SC SC SC) with siblings John C. (27) and Fannie C. (25).  All three children were b. AL, father b. NC, mother b. SC.  Note: ÒWilliamsonÓ is an archaic placename of uncertain location.

24 Nov 1886, Henry Scarbrough m. Emma Lee JONES at the home of J. W. Sinners [sic = SKINNER], bond, H. Scarbrough and J. W. Skinner. (Marriage Rec. Bk 10:429) (23)

4 Oct 1895, Susan JONES, 75, died at home of her son-in-law Henry Scarbrough in the Judson neighborhood.  Eufaula Times & News, Thurs., 10 Oct 1895. (Foley, Helen S.  1976.  Obituaries from Barbour Co., Alabama Newspapers, 1890-1905.) (CLE) (82) Note: placename ÒJudsonÓ unknown.

5 Feb 1897, birth of male child to Henry Scarbrough (father, farmer, b. AL) and ÒDinkÓ Scarbrough (mother, b. AL) of Beat 6, delivered by W. H. HARRISON, Certificate (1897) No. 12. (Barbour Co. Births, 1897-1899)

1900 Fed Census: This enumeration contains some very confusing or sloppy information: AL, Barbour Co., Pct. 6, ED 12, p. 175A, #134/134:  Henry ÒSCHARBOUGHÓ (b. Nov 1867, 32, married 13 years, b. AL AL AL), wife Emma N/W. (Jan or Jun 1861, 39, m. 13 yrs, 5 children all living, b. AL AL SC): Clifford [sic, apparently correct] (daughter, female, Oct 1887, 12), Oscar (son, March 1890, 10), John H. (son, Apr 1895, 5), Lawrence (son, Feb 1897, 3), Maudie (daughter , male [sic], Feb 1900, age?), John WILLIAMS (servant, white, female [sic], Jan. 1885, 15, b. AL); all children b. AL AL AL.  Adjacent to John SKINNER.  Note that Lawrence corresponds to the child born in Feb 1897, above.

12 Feb 1903, E. L. Scarbrough (with H. C. Scarborough) bought the half interest of G. C. JONES and wife in 44-1/2 acres in S15 T10 R27, Òbeing the lands sold to us jointly by the Commission appointed by Probate Judge under an order to sell, as the property of Susannah JONES, decÕd.Ó (Deed Rec. Eufaula Div., F:179) (94)

1910 Fed Census: Barbour Co., Pct. 6, Williamson, ED 12, p. 147A, #53/53: Henry and Emma Scarbrough, with four children: Oscar, John, Lawrence, and Maudie.  Daughter CliffordÕs whereabouts in 1910 are unknown; she may have been married (see next) but available census indices do not reveal her.

1920 Fed Census: Barbour Co., Pct. 11, Richard, ED 20, p. 197B-198A, #63/63: Henry and Emma L. Scarborough [indexed on Ancestry.com as ÒSearboroughÓ], with widowed daughter Clifford (31, listed as a Scarborough) and 4 grandchildren, presumably the children of Clifford: Carrie B. (gdau, 9), Myrtle (gdau, 8), Marium (gson, 6), Nellie L. (gdau, 4), all born in AL.  Henry is the manager of a general farm.

1920 Fed Census: Adjacent to Henry and Emma but listed as household #57/57 on p. 198A is John H. Scarborough (24) and wife Nancy? (20, b. AL AL AL).  John is a tenant farmer.

1920 Fed Census: Oscar (29) and Lawrence (22) are living in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL.  Oscar has his own family (wife Pearl and daughters Audrey and Emogene); Lawrence is living with this family.  Oscar is a barber and Lawrence works as a machinist for an auto company. (I thank Pat Scott for directing me to this information; the Ancestry.com index of these people is completely goofed up.) (There is also a Lawrence Scarborough in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., b. in TN.)

            5 Dec 1921, H. C. and E. L. Scarbrough took out a mortgage from (?) G. W. PILHAM. (Mortgages Vol. 102:355; original not examined) (71)

6 Sep 1927, Henry C. Scarborough died; buried at Rocky Mount Cem., Barbour Co. (Barbour Co. Cemetery Records;  TCL, CLE) (84)

1 Apr 1943, Emma Lee Scarborough died; buried at Rocky Mount Cem., Barbour Co. (Barbour Co. Cemetery Records;  TCL, CLE) (84)

J. ÒSCROWOUGHÓ [sic, probably Scarborough]

4 Apr 1868, H. PEANIN (?), sale of real estate at Cox Mill on 30 March 1848 for non-payment of taxes for 1847; J. SCROWOUGH was the highest bidder; land in S28 T9 R26. (Conv. Rec. T:227) (56)

J. F. SCARBOROUGH (see John Franklin Scarborough)

J. S. SCARBROUGH

22 Feb 1870, Promissory Note for $405.90, from J. S. Scarbrough and S. L. JONES, due 15 Oct 1870, to purchase necessary provisions and implements to make a crop; secured by crop Òon said FeaginÕs and Dr. LawsonÕs farmÓ and other items. (Conv. Rec. V:235) (56)

Note: Association unknown.  Silas D. Pinkney Scarborough had a son Josiah Silas Warren Scarborough but his whereabouts in 1870 are unknown to me.  Note also that Henry C. ScarboroughÕs wife was a Jones; his mother-in-law was Susan JONES.  More research is needed on the location of the above record to see if it can be associated with other ScarboroughÕs.

J. T. SCARBOROUGH (see John Franklin Scarbourough)

J. W. SCARBOROUGH

    Doney GRIFFIN, wife

Note: This is potentially John W. Scarbrough, son of William A. and Rosianna Scarbrough, grandson of Aven Jr. & Miley Scarbrough (not proven).  John W.Õs sister Lucy also married a Griffin (q.v.).

            15 Jul 1896, J. W. (groom) m. Doney GRIFFIN (bride) at Eufaula. (Marriage Rec. Bk 13:223) (24)

JAMES SCARBOROUGH

    Estelle CLARK, wife

30 Sep 1922, James Scarborough m. Estelle CLARK. (Marriage Rec. Bk 19:324) (26)

JAMES A. SCARBOROUGH, kinsman of Noah and Hardy F. Scarborough

    Mary Ann BRYAN, wife

Note:  The current thinking among Scarborough researchers is that James A. Scarborough is a son of Noah & Margaret (Jossey) Scarborough and grandson of Addison & Josey (Howell) Scarborough of the Edgecombe Co., NC/Burke Co., GA, group.  JamesÕ middle name may be Addison (fide Dianna Nelson).  The JamesÕs, AddisonÕs, and NoahÕs are among the most confusing groups of the Scarborough lineages.

Note:  This is apparently the same James A. Scarborough who is found in Russell Co. records  during the period,  1838-1852, with one record there in March 1865.  Briefly, those records include:  (1) the marriage of James A. Scarborough to Mary Ann Bryan on 28 June 1838, (2) an order to be Overseer on the Invinton Stage Road (March 1843), (3) purchase and sale of lands in S10 T14 R30 (Russell Co.), (4) papers as administrator of the estate of Thomas P. BRYAN, decÕd, 1845-1851 with one report in March 1865, and (5) guardianship documents for Amanda BRYAN, minor heir to Thomas P. Bryan, 1848-1852.

            20 April 1857, James A. Scarborough bought land (3 tracts) in S5 & 6 T11 R25 and S31 T12 R25 from Henry BULLARD and wife Emily G. Bullard. (Deed Rec. Bk O:15) (33)

22 & 28 April 1857, an untitled ledger book at the Clayton Courthouse has two entries for James A. Scarborough for 50 cents on each of these dates.  It is not clear if these were payments (e.g. reimbursements) for services as Justice of the Peace or credits for some purchase.  After the two entries, the word ÒEvenÓ is written. (BCC) (5)

3 Nov 1858, Hardy F. Scarborough bought land in S30 T12 R25 [near Mt. Andrew] from Necy LEWIS and wife Rebecca Lewis; witness, J. C. WHITE; certified by James A. Scarborough, Justice of the Peace (Conv. Rec. O:618) (50)

JAMES N. SCARBROUGH, son of Aven Scarbrough Jr.

    Louisa Unk., wife

Note: I found no public records that I can associate with this family.  See also, James Noah Scarborough, next paragraph, from a different lineage.

1860 Fed Census: Russell Co., Beat 9, Watoola, p. 28, #204/203; 9-yr-old ÒJ. N.Ó in household of ÒAenÓ and ÒMilaÓ Scarbrough with 6 siblings.

1870 Fed Census, James N. Scarbrough in T11 R28 (Eufaula P.O.) with wife Louisa, son Henry (3) and daughter Cora (1); I have not found this couple anywhere in the 1880 Fed Census, however, I believe a 13-yr-old Henry Scarborough in the household of James M. FLOYD in 1880 is very likely to be the son of James N. and Louisa since the FloydÕs are also associated with his sisters Marilla and Laura G. F. Scarbrough (q.v.).  See notes for Henry C. Scarbrough.

JOHN FRANKLIN SCARBOROUGH, son of James A. Scarborough

    Susan A. WILLIAMSON, wife

Note:  Records most commonly refer to ÒJ. F.Ó or (apparently) ÒJ. T.Ó Scarborough.  Without a full given name, I could not always determine for certain to whom such records refer.  In all likelihood, these all refer to John Franklin Scarborough (b. 1840, son of James A. Scarborough) --see the record for 9 Feb 1870.  The dates are too early to refer to James Franklin Scarborough (b. 1874, son of J. H. T. Scarborough).  Other males matching the initials ÒJ. F.Ó in the Ichabod Scarborough and Addison Scarborough lineages were all born well after 1845 and thus would not be of age for these types of transactions.

abt 1840, John F. born in GA (1860 Fed Census)

1860 Fed Census: Barbour Co., Mt. Andrew, 20 yrs old, at home with parents James and Mary and 4 siblings.

Note:  I canÕt find anyone matching J. F. Scarborough in Barbour Co. in the 1870 Fed Census.

JOHN HENRY SCARBROUGH, son of Henry C. Scarbrough

    Zenobia Cornelia ÒNobeyÓ HORNE, wife

Note:  Zenobia Horne is a great granddaughter of Malinda Scarborough, thus probably a great great granddaughter of Ichabod Scarborough.  John HenryÕs great great grandfather Aven Scarborough Sr. was a close kinsman of Ichabod, perhaps a brother.  If so, that would make John Henry and Zenobia 4th cousins.

8 April 1895, John Henry Scarborough born in Barbour Co. (1900 Fed Census; Social Sec. Death Index)

17 Mar 1899, Zenobia Cornelia HORNE born in Barbour Co. (Barbour Co. Cemetery Records;  TCL, CLE) (84)

JOHN W. SCARBROUGH, son of William A. Scarbrough, grandson of Aven Jr.

Note:  See J. W. Scarborough, above.  No other public records were found in the courthouses.

abt 1873, John W. born presumably in Barbour Co., AL (1880 Fed Census).

Ref. Publ., Inc., Fort Worth, TX])

Note:  I have not been able to locate this couple after 1882 in Fed Censuses or other doc uments.  A ÒJ. M. FloydÓ is indexed on p. 102 of Helen S. FoleyÕs ÒAlabama Seriec, Vol. II, (Deaths), (A listing of death notices appearing in newspapers...1846-1890)Ó but I have not examined that entry yet.

    L. J. SMITH, husband?

Note: This daughter has been difficult to trace.  Enumerated as ÒM. F.Ó and ÒRillaÓ.  Based on some research on nicknames, I speculate that her given name was ÒMarillaÓ.   I found no public records for M.
