Welcome to Our Cundiff Web Page

Almost all researchers involved with the Cundiff line in America, can trace their lineage back to Richard Cundiff the Immigrant. There is a thesis that Richard was the son of James Cundiff and was born in Billington, County of Lancashire in England about 1638. The information appears very promising but we have been unable to verify it. When trying to piece together the genealogy we can almost always assume that if we have a Cundiff, they "must" fit somewhere. Cathy and Greg Roberts have done some wonderful work on the Cundiff line and they have documented a lot of references in their Family Tree Maker Web Page. In addition Cathy maintains a Cundiff Family Center Web Page.

In preparing the Cundiff Genealogies, we have tried to include as many of the documents as practical. We have added some of our thoughts in the biographies but have tried to note our logic.

We would be very interested in any additional documentation (Court Records, Bible Records, Census Records, Tombstones) that any other researchers could share. If anyone believes we have used faulty logic we would appreciate any comments and documentation to improve the accuracy.

The Search for Cundiff Ancestors

When we started to research the genealogy of the Cundiffs, we had our line back to my Great Grandfather Benjamin Langston Cundiff (1845-1917), but beyond that we knew very little. My sister Vivian prepared a family history in 1978 for publication in Cimarron Valley Legends. This was a two volume work that included submissions from families and articles covering the history of the area in the area surrounding Perkins, Oklahoma. Vivian was able to document the descendants of Benjamin Langston Cundiff. In her research, she ran across the names of two of Benjamin's brothers and a sister and the story that they Benjamin had been born in Illinois.

About 1986 when Carol and I became interested in genealogy, the first thing we got involved with was the census. We were strictly novices but we started searching for Cundiffs in Illinois in 1850 and 1860. We found a family with a Marshall, Jerome, Benjamin and Harriet, the names we were searching for. We were hooked. Over the next couple of years we were able to trace our line back to Richard Cundiff the Immigrant. We have been filling in holes ever since. I applied for membership is the Sons of the American Revolution and was able to prove back to a John Cundiff from Northumberland County, Virginia who served.

We have not restricted our research to my direct line but have researched many different lines who descended from Richard Cundiff the Immigrant. We have made numerous trips to Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and Kansas. Our focus has been before 1850 and we feel that if we can get a good baseline, it will simplify other Cundiff research. We will never know all the answers but the journey is exciting and rewarding.
