OBITUARY OF ELISHA GREENE SR

Died in Baker Co Fla near Sanderson on the 17th instant, Elisha Greene Sr, age 85 years & 15 days. Mr. Green was born in SC near Georgetown, but while very young his father moved to Bulloch Co GA & resided there until he moved to Fla in 1829. He served in the war against England in 1812 under Gen. Jackson. He was with Gen. Jackson during the campaign thru Fla. On Christmas Day 1830, he commenced his settlement on the South Prong of the St Marys River, which was then a wilderness inhabited only by Indians. He made a camp site at the root of a big tree whilst preparing a shelter for his family, consisting of a wife and 6 small children. On the beginning of the Seminole War, he enlisted and served during the war; twice he was obliged to send his family to GA for safety. His property was destroyed and buildings burned by Indians, but he returned to rebuild his home, collecting such remnants of stock as had escaped the marauding savages. By hard work & careful management, he was soon able to surround himself with the comforts of life. In 1840 he bought his first slave he ever owned, the writer of this notice, who regrets he is not able to do justice to the friendship which sprung up between master & servant, which lasted until death came between them. As a master, he was kind & just and never separated families nor was he careless of their welfare in any particular. Mr. Greene was a Baptist for 30 years and died in the faith. He left a large family of children & grandchildren & great grands. The last time the author saw Mr Greene, he requested that two of his old servants to come & assist at his burial if he died first. The promise was made. A telegram summoned them, they took the train & arrived in time to finish digging the grave and join in the last rites of the remains. Well done, thy faithful servant; enter into the joys of the lord.
