Every researcher comes across some names in their research, which puzzle the researcher. They may have been one of their children’s sponsors? Enumerated with them on the census? Came up in a discussion with relative?...etc? How was this person relevant to the family? In some cases, following these mysterious people have uncovered a bundle of genealogical information, I would not otherwise have found. If you have any additional information on any of these individuals please e-mail Ginny Chung with the details.

In 1867 John and Catherine Crowley lived at 24 Athens
Drive and John is listed as a switchman.
Patrick Donahoe lived at 12 Oneida St in 1892, which
is near Michael and Joanna Crowley.
Given that it was Michael son of John J. Crowley which
my aunt recalls as a cousin, I suspect that John J and Michael (husband
of Joanna) may have been siblings.

Checking the 1870 census - I found no matches for Margaret
Kilroy. Checking the 1880 census, I find ... Could this be mother/daughter?
If so, it still doesn't explain the relationship to Catherine Lyons or
James Fallon?

William F. Manning was a boilermaker until about 1889 when he entered the Boston police. His naturalization record was found. Patrick Manning witnessed it. Could this be his father? Although there was a Patrick Manning who lived next door to him in 1880, possibly an older brother.
William F Manning - boilermaker, born in County Galway March 17 1860, immigrated May 9 1868 to Boston. He was naturalized October 2, 1883. Witness Simon Joyce of 61 Gold St, Patrick Manning 15 A St. He married Nellie M Murphy on September 21, 1893. His parents are listed as Patrick and Margaret Manning. William was 32 and his bride was 23. Reverend M. F. Murphy of Boston married them. Checking the wills of William and his son, we find a few more facts relating to this family. His eldest daughter Mildred became legal guardian to the youngest 3 children. She eventually married someone named Plansky and died in the 1980’s.

Joanna Connell - daughter of Daniel and Catherine, married John O'Neill in St. Mary’s Church on October 30th 1822 in Cork, Ire. They lived at Gallows Lane, which was at the East End of the town close to Mallow Castle. Some of the children of this marriage were baptized in Mallow. The record of their son Patrick's baptism has not been found, but it is known that he was born in Mallow in 1832.
Patrick married Julia Fox, who was born in Mallow in 1839. Around 1845
Patrick, together with his brothers Michael and John, left for the United
States to work with the New England Brick Co. They worked as laborers in
the Brickyards and this was very tough physical work. Patrick and Julia's
son, Thomas P. O'Neill, married Rose Anne Tolan. They had three children,
the youngest being Thomas 'Tip', born 9th December 1912 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He graduated from Boston College in 1936 with a B.A. degree. 'Tip' married
Mildred Anne Miller on 17th June 1941. They had five children. Formerly
engaged in the insurance business, he began his political career in 1936
when he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He served
until 1952. During his tenure in the Massachusetts legislature he
served as Minority Leader (1947 - 1948) and was elected as the first
Democratic Speaker of the Massachusetts House in 1948.
In 1952 he was elected to the 83rd Congress, succeeding the late President
John F. Kennedy. Mr. O'Neill represented the 8th District of Massachusetts
in the U.S. House of Representatives for 16 consecutive terms.
First appointed House Majority Whip in 1971, he served in that capacity during the 92nd Congress. In 1973 he was elected House Majority Leader, this position he held until he was elected Speaker in 1977. Speaker O'Neill had received 18 honorary degrees from various colleges throughout the country and had been presented with numerous Community Service Awards. In October 1986 he retired as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Tip O'Neill died on 6th January 1994. He was buried on Monday, January 10th, in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Harwichport, Cape Cod

found the following candidate. Denis death certificate lists his

SPELLMAN, BRIDGET
Bridget Spelman first showed her face in the 1900 census of Belinda Keliher. She was listed as Belinda’s aunt in the census and immigrating to US in 1870. She later shared her home with Belinda’s sister Catherine Coyle. Bridget never married and died in 1907.
Searching probate court, I found her will in 1907. She identifies the Scanlon siblings (Belinda Brennan of Boston, Thomas Scanlon of Boston, Patrick Scanlon of Worcester, Catherine F Coyle of Boston and Agnes Scanlon of Milton) as her nephews and nieces. She bequeathed the majority of her estate to her niece Catherine F. Coyle, naming as executor, Catherine’s husband Thomas. At the time of her death, Bridget was living with Catherine and Thomas Coyle.
There were 2 references of Bridget Spellman as aunt
to the Scanlon children, the census, and then again in the will.
Given the SPELLMAN surname matched Mary Spelman Scanlon’s maiden name,
I initially suspected that Bridget and Mary Spelman Scanlon may have been
sisters. However on Bridget's death certificate it lists her parents
as Thomas Spellman and Bridget Scanlon. This could be wrong, but
at this time I have no proof of that. There was a Bridget Spelman
born on January 8 1865 to Thomas Spelman and Mary Higgins in Tobercurry,
Sligo, and Ire. Checking the 1880 census and the city directories
may uncover further information on this woman.
This family immigrated to Boston in 1880 with their
eldest being born in Ire according to the census. On September 15,
1880 there was a Dominick Spellman who entered Boston on the S.S. Austrian
from Londonderry, Ire. His age is 26. On the same ship, also
from Londonderry was a woman Mary Spellman, age 22. Could this be
our Dominik Spellman and his wife? If so, how did they show up in
the 1880 census?
Dominick Spellman married Mary Mahar in Ire. Dominik is listed as a teamster in the brewery business. He had at least 9 children, of which only 5 lived to adulthood. There are very sketchy details on some of his children.
THULISH,CATHERINE Catherine Thulish was the godmother to Hannah Thulish O'Leary's daughter Margaret in 1880 in Boston at St. Francis de Sales. Given the last surname we can only surmise she is related to Hannah and Daniel but how? As the baptism took place in Boston, did that mean that Catherine also journeyed to Boston? If so what happened to her? In 1889 there was a Catharine McDonald who was godparent to Daniel's son John. Is this the same person?
