The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is the one of the newest countries in the world, but is one of the worlds oldest republics. Often people call the country simply AMERICA, or the UNITED STATES, and enslaved peoples of other lands have looked to it as the LAND OF THE FREE. The United States was officially formed on July 2, 1776. On that day the members of the Continental Congress decided to declare the independence of the states from Great Britain. They made their declaration public on July 4, 1776. It is a new country compared to the countries of Europe and Asia which have had governments for hundreds of years. But the United States of America is an old republic. The world had few republics in 1776, when the United States declared its independent and democratic form of government. At that time only Genoa, Venice, Switzerland, Andorraq, San Marino, and The Netherlands could claim that they were republics. They were all small, and had little influence in world affairs.
In 1565 the Spanish established the first permanent settlement at Saint Augustine, in what is now Florida. In 1607 the London Company founded the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown, in what is now the state of Virginia. Other settlements were made along the Atlantic Coast. England gained control of several colonies other nations had established. In 1776 there wer thirteen Atlantic Coast Colonies controlled by Great Britain.
In 1776, the thirteen British colonies revolted against the laws and order of their mother country. The Declaration of Independence, enacted on July 4, 1776, was the first official use of the name United States of America. Since 1776, the United Sates of America has developed from the original thirteen states in to a great country made up of fifty states and the District of Columbia.
