Wisconsin was explored by the French from bases in Canada. Jean Nicollet visited eastern Wisconsin in 1534. A fuller expedition was conducted by traders Radisson and Groseilliers (1658-1659) Father Allouez established a mission near the present Green Bay in 1665. The first permanent settlement was made near the same area in 1670. The entire state was a part of New France until the French were defeated in 1763. The sympathies of the settlers were primarily to the British, and retained their allegiance during the Revolutionary War.
The United States acquired Wisconsin as a result of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, ending the War and establishing American independence. The region was included in the Ordinance of 1787, establishing the Northwest Territory. When Indiana Territory was separated from this in 1800, Wisconsin was included in Indiana. In 1805, it became a part of Michigan Territory, and from 1808 to 1818 it was a part of Illinios Territory. Wisconsin was again transferred back to Michigan Territory after Illinois became a state in 1818, and remained a part of Michigan Territory until 1836. In that year, Wisconsin Territory was organized, thus ending a complicated series of changes in government. Wisconsin Territory included parts of Minnesota, Iowa and the Dakotas. Iowa was separated in 1838. On May 29, 1848, Wisconsin was made the 30th State in the Union and was reduced to its present boundaries.--by Applepie_43
