1900 Census, WHERE IS LEROY?

In the marriage records of Sumner County, TN, there is a marriage: Abisha Williams to Peggy Brigance, 13 MAR 1816.

Mr. J. C. Paschal helped dig his grave.

From Goodspeed:

L. E. JONES is a native of Tennessee. and was born in the year 1816.  His parents were North Carolinians by birth, and his maternal grandfather served his country faithfully in the Revolutionary war.  The subject of our sketch was reared on a farm by one of his uncles, Isaiah Hammond, and lived with him until after attaining his twenty-first birthday, and then began the battle of life for himself, and has been a tiller of the soil up to the present time.  In January, 1840, he united his fortunes with Miss Nancy Bryant, of Bedford County, and their union resulted in the birth of twelve children, seven of whom are now living.  Our subject has been quite prosperous in his farming enterprises, and is now living in sight of the first house that was ever built in Bedford County.  He received limited educational advantages, but has always manifested a willingness to aid in any and all enterprises pertaining to the advancement of educational interests.  His political views are Democratic, and he gives his support to that party. He has always been scrupulously honest in all his business transactions, and is considered one of Bedford County's most substantial citizens.

        34.  Leroy Thomas "Tom" *3 Williams (Mahala Sumner *2 Jones, Richard *1) was born 13 May 1848 in <Bedford County>, Tennessee11, and died 05 Sep 1920 in <Bedford County, Tennessee>11.  He married (1) Mary Caroline * Lentz 21 Dec 1872 in Bedford County, Tennessee12, daughter of Samuel Lentz and Louisa Springer.  She was born 23 Jan 185413, and died 10 May 187813.  He married (2) Kitty W. Bruster 12 Dec 1878 in Bedford County, Tennessee, daughter of Hugh Bruster and Nancy Lentz.  She was born 02 Nov 1861 in Tennessee14, and died 02 May 1935 in <Bedford County, Tennessee>14.  He married (3) Annie unknown ABT. 1907 in PROB. TN.  She was born ABT. 1867 in TN.

Notes for Leroy Thomas "Tom" * Williams:

Leroy Thomas "Tom" Williams, Jr. was married three times. His first two wives were 1st cousins (i.e., Mary Caroline Lentz and Kitty Bruster were cousins because they were both grand-daughters of Benjamin F. Lentz).

Sometimes Thomas Williams is confused with Thomas E. Williams of Bedford County, TN of about the same era. This confusion arises by virtue of the death certificate of his son, William Williams,  whereupon it is stated that his father was Thomas E. Williams. Whether this is an error of ignorance or communication, I know not. In any case, THIS Thomas Williams is the one buried next to his brother Zachary and their parents with a tombstone reading "Thomas Lee Williams". From the census records, it can be seen (particularly in the 1860 census, where he is called "L. T., Jr.") that he is more properly called Leroy Thomas Williams, Jr., and that he was by the name "Tom", and probably also sometimes "Thomas". I believe he was called by his middle name to distinguish him from his father, Leroy Thomas Williams, Sr., who was called by "Lee", as in, short for "Leroy". I believe it was this name truncation ("Leroy" to "Lee") which led to Leroy Thomas Williams, Jr. being buried as "Thomas Lee Williams".

I have merged info from the Neeley database. I presume that these are the same people. I have no evidence other than that below.

There was a Haley Williams (21 OCT 1877-26 NOV 1906), wife of H. S. Neeley (probably Henry Spencer Neeley) buried in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Bedford County, Tennessee.

H. Spencer Neeley (25 JAN 1872-15 OCT 1962) is buried next to Haley Williams, and also to what is probably his second wife, Alice L. (maiden name unknown) (03 APR 1882-07 AUG 1969).

Process of elimination. His mom said in the 1900 census she had 8 children and 6 yet lived. All other children known to be living except Samuel. There is some possibility that "Joe" and Richard are the same person. If that is the case, one more child has yet to be identified.
