Hi greg,
I want to tell you how very impressed that I am with your website! I can tell that you have put a lot of work into it, (not to mention the actual genealogy work). What brought me to your delightful site was a search for Mary Claxton/Clackston, wife of Joshia Kidwell. She would have been the mother of Deadara, which was the wife of my gggrandfather Thomas Pattison (from Greene County Tennessee). I will admit that I got very excited to see the info you had listed for the Claxton's but I am now confused as to if Mary Claxton is Deadara Kidwell's mother? Deadara was born in Grainger County Tennessee abt. 1799, and I have met a dead in when trying to search farther on her. The same for Thomas Pattison. Thank you for allowing me to enjoy your site. Ana

Dillahunty; and his daughter Susan L. Dillahunty. My gg Grandfather, Robert I. Gee, married Susan L. Dillahunty in Tipton County, Tennessee in 1859.

Hello, Greg,

Came across this web-site while checking for connections between the Bozarth / Bozorth and Springer families of Burlington County, New Jersey and Frederick County, Virginia. I am especially interested in learning more about John Nathaniel Springer and his wife Elizabeth Bozorth, who were married ca 24 Sep 1733 (date of license) in Burlington County. I think the marriage record shows her as "Bosworth." Elizabeth was the d/o Simon Bozorth / Bossard and Mary Mason. Elizabeth was mentioned in Simon's will as Elizabeth Springer. I do not know if husband John was the s/o Jacob Springer or if Dennis Springer, who married Ann Prickett, was a brother or a cousin. There is a lot of conflicting information on the various Spring databases.
Would appreciate any infromation that you could send me for John Nathaniel Springer and Elizabeth Bozorth. I am also willing to furnish the Springer information that I have accumulated over the years, if you think it might be helpful.

Regards, VirJean Potter Bozarth

The Akers and Truex families seemed to think their family genes were pretty clever, judging by how much they intermarried. Sometimes it paid off in clever offspring.

I do not know what nbsp is.

Interested in George Lacey b ca 1850 and his wives. You have him married to Martha Bruce which is correct. But you also have him married to his mother in law, Martha KING Bruce, mother of Martha Bruce. Martha King Bruce was md to James Benjamin T Bruce. George Lacey md 2nd Lou Sandlin. I can send more details if you really want them.

Another daughter of George Lacey and Martha Bruce is Dorsey who md Lucien Jackson Pickens.

I am interested in this family beginning with Bruce and moving down through Lacey. Also mildly interested Pickens and Sandlin. Also interested in your source for George Lacey and wives. I see easily how the mistake was made since you do not have dates.

George Lacey was born ca 1850, Martha Bruce his wife was born 1856. Martha King Bruce, mother of Martha Bruce was born 1835.

I have tried to make this clear but if it is not acceptable, please email me and I will make another attempt. Thanks.

I'm just trying to understand the "mindset" , if you will in why he came over to America since apparently all his ancestors had lived in Formby for sime time. Thanks!

However, my great-grandfather, Issac Gentry is missing from your roles, he was a son of Shelton Gentry born around 1850 and died in Gibson county in the early part of last century ( I have more accurate info in another computer ). He's shown in the 1880 Census with his name spelled Isac. It will be fun to share notes. Great website, especially the Bible entries.

I was looking for some of my ancestors and spotted this as they have same names of some of mine. When they did not fit I checked other sites for info to see which family they belonged to and found yours. Not all the ages agree with your info and a couple kids are missing. Kind of sad that Hans died in 1848-basicly shortly after getting to US! Anyhow thought you might like the info.

Read a bit on your shave creaming tombstone, we were told by a place that sells tombstones that it won't hurt them, we have done several with the shave cream, you can read stones that you wouldn't be able to read other wise, one thing that is important to do is to wash it off when you are done, we carry a small sprayer with water when we are going to the cemeteries.

I finally found Fredrick BONNER age 6, born in Ohio, on the 1860 census for the city of Newark, Licking Co., Ohio. He is listed with Lester BONER age 40, born in England; Mrs. Ann Boner age 46 born in England; Stephen Boner age 14, born in England; and Frank Boner age 14, born in England.

Family tradition is that Lester's name was Mark (perhaps his middle name), and that Ann's maiden name was PRESS. One of the 14 year olds is their natural son and one is a boy they brought with them from England. I presume the second boy to be a nephew either Lester of Ann. Lester's occupation is that of a lime burner.

I next find Lester, Ann and Fred BOUNER on the 1870 census living in Sumner Twp., Webster Co., Iowa and Lester's occupation is that of a miller.

I haven't been able to find Lester or Ann on the 1880 census, but I did find Fred BONNER living in a boarding house in Quincy, Adams Co., IL. His occupation is miller.
Fred died in Los Angeles, CA in 1939. His son, Elmer John, gave very sketchy and sometime incorrect information on Fred's death certificate which is why it has taken me so long to find the family. A variety of spellings for the BONNER name didn't help my search.

I would like to find the final resting places for Lester and Ann and learn what happened to the two 14 year old boys, Stephen and Frank. It is possible that these boys served in the Civil War as they would be close to the correct age.

is there anything definite? Texas census records are too
often just initials in 1850 Texas. Good to see your site.

Hi Gregg,

I enjoyed looking at your website. I am looking for my great grandfather George W. Castleberry b. 1859 in Arkansas or Illinois and died in 1918 in St. Clair County, Belleville, Illinois. His Death Certificate reads that his father was also George W. Castleberry born in Arkansas. I am not sure if that information is correct. I know that he was married three times, once to Clara Shores, then Emma Skinner then to my Great Grandmother Jeanette Beck.

My Grandmother was Minnie Hope Castleberry born in Jan 1906 in Edwards Illinois and was married to Seth William Overby.

Would you have any information on my Castleberry lineage?

Thank you in advance,

I think his Father was Nathan Renfro that married Milinda Allen. As you can see i don't have much to go on.I would be very grateful for any help you can give me. I plan a trip to Mississippi soon, Because i think that is where they came from. I was told that they started in Kentucky. Thank you Belle

The best evidence is that there were two Adam Wylies and not one who married the two women Jean and Margaret Brown, one being the son or grandson of the other, argusments vary over which.

Otherwise you have one old man with an incredible life span.

Could not find the Wylies at this page but found it at your ancestry.com tree.

Your site appears to be quite well devised otherwise.

Searching for Jordan Moore family from Cumberland County, NC. Jordan Moore moved his family from Cumberland Co. to Greene Co., Alabama around 1825. He supposedly had family in Abbeville, SC and or Elbert County, Georgia. Clues point to the fact that the name of Jordan's father may have been William Moore.

Looking for information on George W. Castleberry born Dec. 1, 1859, Arkansas and Died August 6, 1918 in Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois.

His first wife was Clara Shores.
His Second wife was Emma Skinner. They had the following children together.
1) Meridith was born Mar 1887 and died 1948
2) William M. was born Jan 1889
3) Blanche E. was born Aug 1891 and died 1969
4) Charles was born Apr 1893
5) Winnie P was born 1893. She married Daniel Kenealy.

George also married Jeanette Beck (my Great Grandmother) in 1900 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Jeanette was born June 3, 1869 in Indianna. She died Sep 15, 1950.
George and Jeanette had the following children:
1) Mary E. born Jun 22, 1903 and died Jun 1928
2) Clinton G. was born Sep 13, 1905 and died Apr 28, 1971 in Westland Michigan. He was married to Agnes Hugeley.

5) Nile Edward was born Dec 26, 1910 and died May 1986.

I am unable to find any information on who was George W. father and mother. On his death certificate it states his father was George W. Castleberry and that he was born in Arkansas. I am unable to verify that. I have been told that possibly his death certificate may have been wrong and that his father was Daniel John Castleberry and that he was born in Illinois, again, I do not been able to prove that either. If you should have any information that would help in my research of my Castleberry Lineage, it would greatly be appreciated. Thank you

I am looking for information on Robert Joe Cowling, (my grandfather) son on Joseph Robert Cowling. I have not been able to determine who Robert's mother was. Joseph Robert was married to three different women. If Mamie Walker was his mother, that would explain why my mother, Iva Ray Cowling, was told he was an orphan. We were always told that Robert was five years younger than my grandmother, Edna Smith, born Jan. 16, 1892. Robert would have been born Feb. 1897 the month and year that Mamie Walker died. And, he would have been eight when Joseph Robert died in 1905. All the information I have found says he was born about Feb. 1898 or 1899. Robert died Christmas Eve, 1932, at 35 years of age, just 18 days before his set of twins turned two on Jan. 12. Thank you in advance for any information that that you might have.

Gregg, i noticed a couple months ago and noted to you a couple of errors in your data on the Theodore and Magdalen Feldhaus family. one error was the birthdate of Lawrence Feldhaus, which should be Oct 18,1912, not Dec 18. while changing that, you might add that he died Apr 6, 2003. the other error is that you name a William Feldhaus(1910-1976) as oldest in the family. there was no William. the William you have listed is actually William Calmus, husband of Irene Feldhaus. you may check your exact same birth and death dates to be assured.
another thing, Margaret, Lawrence, Bernard, Dorothy, and Irene have passed away, but the others you have listed are still living, as of this date, Sept, 2004. however, you do not have the actual 11th sibling listed: Robert Joseph(Sept 18, 1927 -- Apr 18, 1983).
i am in occcasional contact with member of the Feldhaus family(my relatives). all would appreciate your attention to correction of your records...... thank you for all your efforts in maintaining acccurate family data.

regarding your entries for the Wm Neises/Mary Feller and Feldhaus descendants of Howard, Miner Co, SD..... i notice a couple of errors. i grew up at Howard around almost all of these people. as mentioned by Carol Brutty some time back, her father Lawrence Feldhaus was born Oct 18,1912, not Dec 18. also, it is possible there was an infant death of William Feldhaus(not recorded anywhere)1910, we have no record of William in that Feldhaus family, and certainly not living until 1976.... further, Mildred(1917) and Marie(1919) are still living, so should not be named in the Ancestry.com file. ..... also, the youngest of the Feldhaus family was Robert Joseph(1927-1983). for some reason he is not included in your file.
thanks for your attention and hard work, Greg.

Mr. Bonner,

I have an interesting story. I'm not sure that your research would have anything, but I'll float it by you just in case.

In my great grandfather's possession, he had a photograph
of the children belonging to Pearson Elledge of Lee County, Arkansas. We have been trying to figure out the connection between great grandfather and this family.

The story goes that he, Benjamin Fanklin Crittenden, left Brinkley, AR. along with a brother for Bastrop County, Texas with another family, the Jerrells, as orphaned children. Probably in the early 1880s.

Some year's later, he went back to Brinkley to visit the old homestead. This probably occurred during the teens or twenties of the 1900s. We have never been able to track his line and the only clue would be the dad's name, Dolf & Adolphus Crittenden, on his death certificate. This family does not appear on the 1880 census and the closest link would be the 1870 St Francis County, AR. for an A. C. Crittenden and the photograph of the Elledge kid's, whose names are posted on your website.

If your files show anything on this family or if any oral history made it's way down the family tree, I would enjoy hearing from you and maybe solving this family mystery.

Thankyou very much for your time.

Gregg, I am doing reasearch on Roy Eghart Hollingshead. I believe that he is the biological father of Floyd R. Toland. Roy Hollingshead died in 1969. He married Allie Mae Hensley August 14, 1908. He is listed on the 1910 Federal Census with Allie M and Floyd (9/12). Members of the family recall that Roy said that Allie left him and took his sons. He never knew where they went and he never knew whether he was divorced or not. He never remarried. I do not know how they fit into your genealogy but if you have any information that you could share I would appreciate it. I have a lot of genealogy on this family if anyone is interested. Hi Greg, In Worldconnect you may want to rethink Arthur Jones and wife Susanna King as parents of James Jones born ca 1641. At first I was excited to see someone had his parents but in checking Arthur in other data bases I see all have Arthur (wife Susanna King)as born in 1660 and his parents Arthur Jones born 1630/1635 & wife Margaret. I realize these dates are guesses but it still throws up a red flag. Of course I am hoping you have "proof" and the others are all wrong. I desend from James Jones daughter Hannah. Thanks, Ellnora

Hi Gregg:

I do not know if you remember me or not but I was the one that put you and Hal Groat together. I am researching my fathers people in Lincoln, Marshall, Beford, Moore CO's in TN and where ever. I told you that I was trying to find info on the husband of my grandfather's sister, Anna Wright of Chestnut Ridge, who married Samuel Thompson Stephenson. I have been in contact with a couple of people that have sharred a lot with me. Samuel's father was James Asbury, his father Wm Hamble, his father Edward and then Robert and finally Edward. I have collected much info on this family but am still trying to organize it and put it in my data base.

The reason I have visted you site tonight is I was at you world connect looking at Bartlett Renfro. When I started this 3 years ago I was told by people in LCT that Bartlett was my great grandmother, Rebecce Renfro Wright's father. He was not. I have all of Bartletts children and Rebecca is not his. I have leads but cannot prove anything. But as Bartlett was in LCT by 1820 but left by 1833 and my grandparents James Wright and Rebecca Renfro married about 1833 in LCT I am sure there must be a connection but have not found it as yet. Was hoping that I could find more on him at you site.

Hope all is well in Ann Arbor. Have not seen the Groats in a couple of years but we stay in touch by email and phone. Sure miss them and miss seeing Katie becoming a young lady.

I have been to Fayetteville, TN in the last 3 years 3 times. We have formed a group Chestnut Ridge Cousins. We are going to have our 2005 meeting in Lewisburg in June. Hope to be able to go. You can visit our site at www.chestnutridgecousins.org.

If you find anything more on Bartlett let me know, also is he your ancestor or someone you are just researching?

William H Parks and Emma Lulu Smith. I have found them in the 1910 Census in Morris, Okmulgee Oklahoma series T624, Roll 1267, part 1, page 212A. At that time they had three children: Lulu May, Arthur F and Oscar J, by the 1920 Census a daugher Mary Francis was born (he is listed as W. H. Parks in the 1920 Census) in the 1930 Census the daughter Lulu May (23 yrs) was married to Oliver Southern and they had two children Sedelia L. and Edward... they lived with Oliver's parents Kay Pendleton Southern and Laura Blanch Carter in Okmulgee, OK. The Parks family had moved to Long Beach, Los Angeles California... Oscar is still living with them and there are 2 additional daughters Geraldine and Pauline.

I find nothing on William Martin Hamilton Parks myself, except what is above and on several trees that list him with the three names. I'm certain that I have the right persons. Sedelia Southern (Sanders) was my son's grandmother, Lulu May Parks (Southern) was his greatgrandmother and Emma Lulu Smith (Parks) would be his great-great grandmother. We are trying to establish Cherokee heritage and Lulu May was suppose to be full blood Cherokee therefore her mother and father should also be full blood. Any information is appreciated. I've looked for William Parks family and have had no luck so far. If I can be of help in your endeavors let me know. Thanks, Morgan

Hello Gregg,
You have a great site. Thank you.
My 3G Grandparents are Ignatious and Clearcy Taylor Barrett.
Their daughter, Henrietta ( 1828 - 1861 ) married
Elijah Hocker Aug. 15, 1850 Ohio Co., Ky.
Henrietta is buried in the Miller family cemetery
(Goshen community - Ohio Co. Ky.) as are her sisters,
Dorcas (Phillip) Hocker and Elvira (Elijah) Miller.
Other siblings are buried at Old Liberty Church along with
Ignatious & Clearcy.
I have Clearcy Taylor's parents as Richard and Darcus
THOMAS Taylor. This is from the Richard Taylor family
bible published in Vol. 1, #4 of the Kentucky Genealogist
1959, by Martha Porter Miller.
You have the mother of Ignatious's first wife, Clearcy,
as Dorcas Tarleton. Bible transcript has Darcus Thomas.
You have the mother of Ignatiou's second wife, Elizabeth
Mosley as Jane Tarleton.
I have been told that Clearcy & Elizabeth were 1st cousins.
Would appreciate any information or advice that would
help me solve this puzzle.
In 1983, I submitted a transcript of the Thomas Barrett
will ( I have copy from Ohio Co., Ky. Courthouse)
to Ky. Family Records, Owensboro, Ky.
It was published along with other Barrett family
information in Vol X, page 55.
Elijah and Henrietta Barrett Hocker had a
Daughter Harriett (1854-1932) who married (1875)
my G. Grandfather, Amos Miller (1842-1908)
Thank you again for your great site.

Wynn family from Georgia. My gggrandfather was S. L. Wynne and I think the S. stand for Sloman. He was born abt 1859 in Georgia. Ended up in Texas. Married my gggrandmother A. M. I'm sure that's not spelled right but you know what I'm talking about. I have found Sloman L. Wynne in Texas in the 1910 Hopkins county census and the 1930 Fannin County U.S. Census. Listed as S. L. Wynne in the 1880 Hunt county Texas Census but married to someone else who seems to have died because in 93 is when he married again. This has been a very long search to find him and only today did I find him listed as someone other than S. L. Wynne. I take it Sloman is a sir name from the family. I sure do hope you can help me in this very big puzzle. Thanks for anything you may come up with. Louise Taylor

Wife of William Vance of 1830 McMinn Co.Tn whom I,m sure was married to the daughter of Mastin Strong. The family was wiped out by plague or Indians and Strong lived for awhile and died leaving a son william D. vance who was raised by Mastin and wife and he is listed in the 1850 Bradley Co. Tn. Census as William Strong age 19 and he is several years younger but anyway, Mastin moved to Alabama and William D. Vance moved to Travis co. Texas. Mastin Strong had other daughters and he was in Roane Co. Tn. during early 1800s

Hi, Gregg...
First Stephenson that we can find is:
Robert Stephenson, who married Elizabeth Whitley, 28 May 1793, Lincoln County, KY. Elizabeth was the daughter of Col. William Whitley, famous frontiersman and soldier, who fought with George Rogers Clark. Whitley lost his life in the Battle of the Thames, Ontario, Canada, during the War of 1812. Whitley supposedly killed Tecumseh there. There is lots of information on Whitley, as his home is a Kentucky Historical site in Stanford, KY. However, we cannot find anything on his son-in-law, Robert Stephenson, our ancestor. Robert took his wife and family to Madison County, Mississippi Territory, around 1808. This area became Limestone County, AL. Robert Stephenson's children went by the last name of "Stinson". Robert and his wife, Elizabeth, are buried somewhere in Limestone Co, AL. Robert died around 1825, and Elizabeth around 1830.

Our Stephenson ancestors, Logan Stephenson and family, left
Limestone County,AL, and traveled to Lamar County, TX, in 1846. We have the family history from there on down.

If you every run across the family or siblings of Robert Stephenson, probably born in Augusta, VA, some time around 1770, or so, please drop me a line. We have been looking for his family for years.

Your website is great...Marlene

Recently discovered a connection to the LENTZ line. The death certificate of my gr. grandfather, Lafayette BRUSMAN lists his parents as Daniel BRUSMAN and Fredericka LENTZ. I believe Fredericka is the daughter of JACOB LENTZ and FREDERICKA MOSELMAN.

Lafayette BRUSMAN was born March 30, 1841. By rough comparison of the ages of all listings for Fredericka LENTZ(at Ancestry.com), the daughter of Jacob LENTZ is the most likely candidate for his mother.

Since I have only recently found Fredericka's name, I have no documentation to tell me exactly who she was.

Very good DNA explaination on your site!! Enjoyable reading!!

896. James Rentfrew

Notes for James Rentfrew:
ID: I33821
Name: James RENTFREW
NSFX: Baron
Title: Baron
Sex: M
Note:

Sue: I've been referred to you by Harlan Rentfrow, who tells me you've been doing research on the early Renfro/Rentfro/Renfrews,etc., as have I.
I'm a descendant of Wm.Rentfro/Eliz.Cheney and Joseph Rentfro/Mary Owens.
The only data I've had for years comes from long standing family lore and my mother's old DAR and DAC papers, but it sort of conflicts with information I've been getting from various web sources.
What I've had in my records is as follows:
The county of Renfrew(shire) was the chief patrimony of the Stewarts of Scotland and granted to them by Robert III in 1404. Since that time the eldest son of the reigning Sovereign has borne the title "Baron of Renfrew".
In the last part of the first quarter of the sixteenth century (circa 1525), and after a defeat of the clan, the then reigning Baron JAMES RENFREW, was exiled from Scotland. He went to France where he married a French woman and he andhis issue were citizens of France until after the settlement of Jamestown,Va. inn the then new British colonies. It was descendants of THIS Baron James Renfrew, namely William and James Rentfro, who came to Virginia around 1630 andsettled there. Then my data skips to the grandchildren: "In 1698, 1700 and 1702 three grandsons were born, James, Joseph and William respectively." James married Esther VanBibber, Joseph married Mary Owens and Wm. married Eliz.Cheney.
Further: One of the Rentfro's who came in 1630, and I don't know which one, had a son--another William, who was born circa 1680. He died in Franklin Co., Va. around 1749. Land records place him in Frederick Co. in 1740where he and his wife Jane (last name unk.) purchased 340 acres from a Robert McKay. They sold this property in 1747 and moved to Lunenburg Co., Va. (now northern Franklin Co.)
It has always been thought by my family that this William with wife
Jane were the parents of above James, Joseph and William.
Iam interested to know what documentation you have that Symon is brother to the William and James Rentfro who first came to Jamestown. I never knew, until corresponding with Harlan and Theresa Rentfro that there was such an individual, but until the last year or so have done little research on the matter--only accepting what's been family lore todate. So, anything you come up with on this I would very much appreciate hearing about.I'm also wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to check French records, as it is fairly well documented that Baron James Rentfro was in France. I haven't the slightest ideaof how to go about this, but will
see what I can find out. Seems like several generations of Rentfro's must have left a trail there somehow!
Thanks in advance for whatever you can tell me.

Notes for Thomas Smitherman:

From Memorial Record of Alabama
By Brent and Fuller, 1893

Thomas J. Smitherman, a native of and a prominent attorney of Centrevile, Bibb County was born February 28, 1837. He is a son of Joseph and Sarah (Latham) Smitherman, the former of whom was a native of Randolph County, N. C. and the latter also of North Carolina. They were the parents of seven children, five sons and two daughters, of whom two are living: Mary, widow of I. M. Hicks, now a resident of Chilton County, Alabama, and Thomas J.; the others have died. Joseph Smitherman was reared on a farm, and immigrated from North Carolina to Bibb County, Ala., where he lived until his death in March 1862. He was an upright and honorable citizen and having served as township trustee for twenty years, he had a wide circle of friends. His wife died in 1845 and both he and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church. Thomas J. Smitherman was brought up on a farm until he was sixteen years of age. He attended school at Benson, Chilton county, Summerfield and Selma, preparing himself for his professional work. He took a collegiate course at the Lebanon law school in Tennessee, graduating in 1860. Immediately afterward he located at Centreville, and began the practice of law. In 1861 he enlisted in company B, Eleventh Alabama infantry, under Capt. J. L. Davidson, and served as a private soldier until 1863, when he was discharged. In the latter part of 1863 he enlisted in company H, Capt. F. M. Goode, Alabama infantry, and served until 1864, when he was elected lieutenant of his company. He was appointed register in chancery of his county, came home and remained until 1865, when he was elected to the office of superintendent of education, which position he held until 1870. He was then elected to the legislature as representative from Bibb county. In 1876 he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Judge of Probate J. Gardner, who had died. Since serving as probate judge he has given his entire attention to the law, and is the present county solicitor. He is a member of the city council and has been administrator of the county for ten years. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. He was married June 20, 1861 to Mary E. Howard, born in Bibb County, April 17, 1842 to George W. and Teresa (Coleman) Howard, the latter of whom died in 1855 and the former in 1867. Mr. Smitherman and his wife are the parents of nine children, five sons and four daughters, six of whom are now living, viz. Fannie M., Joseph F., Wiley J., Nellie, Thomas J., Jr., and Howard; those deceased having been named Coleman, Mary L. and Eva. Both Mr. and Mrs. Smitherman are members of the Presbyterian church, of which Mr. Smitherman is an elder.

Letter from Calvin R. Teel to Ivan & Juanita Thomas dated 8 june 1990. (sent to me by Steven Sproul <STDSPL@aol.com>

"For six years, from 1983 to 1989, My search for the history fo the Teel ancestors moved backw ards in time down many trails. It reached a dead-end when I could go no further than a Dee d for the purchase of 166 acres on Elliots Creek By Adam Teal, in 1784 in Bedford Co.,Virgin ia. There was no record of where they were married or where they came from.
For the past six months, I've requested copies of deeds on all Franklin County Teel ance stors that I didn't already have (as grantor and as grantee). Now I feel I must pass on, wit hout knowing all the answers, just what came to light. Franklin Co.,Virginia was chartered i n dec 1785, and on the first personal property tax list in 1786, the names of Adam Teal, an d Nicholas Teel were listed. With this date, I estimated that Nicholas was born before 176 5 and that Adam and Mary Teal were married before 1765, I now know that Nicholas Teal was b orn 16 June 1761, and that Adam and Mary were married on 17 June 1760. These events occurre d in York Co., pa., and these are the trails that lead mmme to find them.
Earlier this year I received copies of two deeds dated 28 Sept 1802 and 29 Sept 1802, i n which Adam Teal was the grantor. He sold off 334 acres for 300 pounds Virginia money, to J ohn Brower on onne (DB 4, P. 383, Franklin Co.,Va.), and the sale of 100 acres for 100 pound s to Hugh French (DB 4, P. 384). Adam Teal signed his name to both , but Mary signed with he r mark. The County Clerk who recorded each deed, wrote in over her mark the name "Modeleney" . Sixteen years earlier, neither could write their names wheen they sold off 150 acres to Th omas Watts (DB 1, pp. 109-111, Franklin Co., Va.) The County Clerk wrote over their marks "A dam Teal and Mary Teal". When these Deeds came in, I also ordered those in Samuel Teal's n ame. Samuel Teal boughht 300 acres for 400 pounds on 10 June 1793, from George and Elizabet h Spangler (DB 3, pp 190-191, Franklin Co.,Va.). Samuel Teal later sold off 260 Acres to Ske lton Taylor for 520 pounds, on 1 sept 1806. Samuel Teal and Caty Teal, his wife, Signed thei r names to this Deed as "Samuel Diel and Caty Diel". (DB 7, pp 417-418, Franklin Co., Va.).
There is no proof that Samuel Teal is related to Adam Teal, but his land was located i n the Maggotty Creek and Elliots Creek area where Adam Teal and Nicholas Teel owned their lan d. The next logical step was to look for records of Adam and Mary Modelany Diel in Pennsylva nia before 1784.
I found the marriage of John Adam Diehl to Mary Magdalena Burkhardt oon the 17 June 1760 , in York twp., York Co., Pa., on an L.D.S Library printout ordered by Mrs. Muriel Teel Coote r in May 1988. .....
I Wrote to the Pennsylvania German Society and since they only publish and do no researc h, they suggested that I contact the York co. Historical Society.... They sent me copie s of data on Adam and Maria Magdalena Diel and their parents. About this same time, Robert W . Teel, (Muriel's Brother), sent me a copy of pages 88-89 of Eighteen Century Emigrants By An nette Kunselman Burgert. (note: full citation and information is found under sources). (7 ) Peter Diel is my ancestor. Adam, Caty (Maria Catherina), and Peter Teal married their spou ses in Franklin Co., Virginia. Nicholas , Anna Maria, And Christina may have married befor e the family moved to Bedford/Franklin Co.,Va. These three marriage records have not been fo und in York co.,Pa., or in the Bedford/Franklin co. courthouses.
Harry A. Diehl published a book in dec 1989, "Diehl Families of York and Adam Counties , Pennsylvania." and has no records of Adam and Mary after the birth of their sixth child, Ma ria Catherina in 1774......
The head of the family that came to America and settled in York Co., Pa., was Johanns Ad am Diehl (Diel)(Thiel) and his wife Maria Catharina Kreischer and seven children, landin in P hiladelphia, Pa., on 27 Aug 1739, carried on the (ship) SAMUEL from Rotterdam. He was 52 yea rs old and his youngest son, Adam who married Mary, was only 5 years old. Johanns Adam Dieh l paid his families passage and in 1740 paid for 300 acres of land in York twp. and built a g rist mill and a home. His will was probated in April 1755 and his industry provided well fo r each member of his family. The Diehl's in York Co. continued acquiring land and building m ills. The Teels in Franklin Co., Virginia , did the same thing, carrying on the skills and l essons learned form their ancestor. Harry A. Diehl knows about this family line now, as I wr ote, sending copies of all the Deeds of Adam and Mary Teal in Franklin Co., and a copy of m y family unit charts from the present to the past.
