ROCKY RANCH

"My gggrandfather, Samuel Everett Rogers, was staying the night at the Secrest home while his son, James Carroll Rogers and the "men folk" from the Secrest home were out chasing marauding Indians.  Samuel was returning to his son's ranch, Rocky Ranch, and was set upon by a band of Indians attacking his daughter-in-law and small babies at their ranch.  Samuel was mounted on a small cow pony and tried to out run the Indians, but they caught him and scalped and killed him.  He is buried on Rocky Ranch near Carlton, TX.  The ranch lies partly in Hamilton Co. and partly in Erath Co."

"Samuel was killed 5/3/1863.  He was born 1809 in Martin Co., NC and came to Texas in 1832. He fought in the Texas Revolution. Samuel married Elizabeth Ann Cooper Sparks.  His daughter-in-law's name was Nancy Elizabeth (Howard) Rogers, known as Eliza.  She found Samuel's body and with the help of a Negro slave, brought his body back to the ranch house on a shed door.  She prepared his body for burial while waiting for her husband, James Carroll Rogers, to return home. Her parents were John H. Howard and Sarah G. (Burleson) Howard.  A grandson and namesake, Samuel Everett Rogers, of Houston, TX,  erected a headstone on his grave.  Rogers descendents continue to visit the gravesite to this day."--Nancy Beinhorn

" My gr-gr-grandfather, Samuel Everett Rogers , was protecting the home of William Harrison Secrest when he was killed and scalped while returning to his son, James Carroll Rogers' home which at one time was called "Rocky Ranch". Samuel Everett Rogers was buried on the spot in 1863. We still visit his grave every year.

If you have any info, I would be grateful."

Thanks for listening.
