J. C. Main, though only 29 years old, was county judge

when the special edition of 1897 was published. He was a
Kentuckian by birth, came to Texas in 1885, and commenced the practice of
law in Hamilton in 1892. He was elected County Judge in 1894 and
re-elected in 1896. To quote from the old paper:
"Judge Main is a smooth, fluent speaker, a logical
debater, and an earnest, conscientious, painstaking officer. He stands as
a fair representative of what can be done by a young man of fair, natural
ability, by close study and earnest and patient attention to
business."
John Main’s widow still lives here (1938) and his son,
Tom Main, who is also a lawyer, lives in Tyler.
