Collins Family Surname Distribution Maps
Collins family branch
- Collins
(1881): The surname is highly concentrated in
the south
of
England, with essentially none in the north or in Scotland. This
argues against an English or Scottish origin for the surname of Richard
Collins (1725-1808), who immigrated from Ulster to the Unites
States in
the 1750's.
- Lippincott:
No map since fewer than 100 households held that surname in 1998.
Surname of Richard
Lippincott
(1620-1683), who immigrated in about 1640 from Plymouth, Devonshire,
England. He was a Quaker emigrating to escape religious
persecution.
- Chamberlain
(1881):
Concentrated in Leicester and towards London, with few in north England
and none in Scotland. William
Chamberlain (1847- aft 1930) immigrated from England in 1873.
- Smithson
(1881): Thomas
Smithson (1655-1713) was reportedly from Moulton, Yorkshire.
Consistent with that, Smithsons are highly concentrated in the York
region
- Bransford:
Too few to map.
- Woodson
(1881): John
Woodson (1586-1644) was reportedly born in Dorchester, Devonshire
(near Land's End) and immigrated in 1619 to Jamestown. The
surname is highly concentrated in small district Wakefield in central
England but has no concentration near Devonshire.
- Furman
(1881): Josias
Firmin (~1625-1709) or his father immigrated from Nayland, or Stoke
by Nayland, Suffolk Co. "Furmans" are concentrated especially in
the area of Coventry, but there is an isolated concentration around
Nayland, near Colchester. "Firmins" are highly concentrated in
and around Colchester, with none in Coventry. Thus, the maps
confirm the original surname "Firmin" and the place of origin.
- Scrymgeour
(1881):
Family of Royal Standard Bearers of Scotland. James
Scrimzeour (1757-~1815) immigrated from Thornhill or Thornhall,
Scotland. The map shows very high concentrations in the areas of
Dundee and Edinburgh.
- Mueller
(current): Johann
Friedrich Mueller (1826-1903), his wife Maria Carolina Theis and
two children emigrated from Allenbach, Kreis Bernkastel,
Rheinland-Pfalz, in 1854. The distribution map is
uninformative because Muellers are spread all over Germany.
(Enter "Mueller" in search window and then choose "Relative
distribution").
- Theis
(current): Maria
Caroline Theis (1829-1900), wife of Johann Friedrich Mueller,
emigrated from Allenbach in 1854. The "Theis" map shows a high
concentration in and around Kreis Bernkastel and through the
Rheinland-Pfalz. (Enter "Mueller" in search window and then
choose "Relative distribution").
Webb family branch
- Webb
(1881):
Highly concentrated in Gloucester and near London, none in north
England or Scotland. Consistent with origin of England, possibly
London, of James
Webb (~1837-aft 1920)
- Todd
(1881):
Highly concentrated in northern England and southern Scotland,
including Greenoch, Inverclyde, Scotland from where Robert
Todd (1821-1907) emigrated as a young child, settling in Dundee,
Illinois in 1835.
- Crichton
(1881):
Only in Scotland, heavily concentrated in Perth mail district. John
Crichton (1787-1862) reportedly emigrated from Glasgow,
Lanarkshire, Scotland; children all born in Airdrie, Scotland.
None in England.
- Hamilton
(1881):
Heavily concentrated around and just south of Glasgow.
Jennett Hamilton (1786-1855) emigrated from Glasgow in about
1830-40.
