EMIGRATION RECORDS1 Records of the Catholic Church in Riedseltz Wissembourg Canton, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France 1830-1846 2
Translated and Compiled by Robert E. Bettac, and posted with his permission (Supplied by Shirley J. Hulett)
While researching my g/g grandfather, Jacob Linck, in his hometown of Riedseltz, I came across the priest's, listing of the families who had emigrated to America and the years that they left. These records are in the Gothic German handwriting although the town was considered French. This LDS film also has the civil records for the town of Riedseltz. The civil records are dated using the French Republican Calendar. The dates listed below come from the church records. I was quite surprised to discover that two of my Jacob's four wives are on the church emigration lists. Jacob emigrated with his soon-to-be first wife, Maria Eva Kolb, and her family on the Ship Charlemagne to New York and arrived II August 1833. His third wife, Catherine Buckenmeyer, my great g/g grandmother, left Riedseltz in 1842. Her arrival in the United States has not been found. Numerous other families listed also settled in Ohio. Those who are directly related to me and located on the census have been noted. I hope this provides the "Link" that others are looking for.
Priest's opening notes: List of all those families and individuals who, because of great emergency, and finding themselves in wretched misfortune, fled to the United States in North America, some having settled in Buffalo and some in the province of Cincinnati by the Ohio [River], leaving on the 23rd of March 1830, and the rest in the year 1831, in different odd and even months, their birthplace being Riedseltz, leaving to the great sorrow of their fellow citizens, having gone where fate leads them.

FOOTNOTES 1 LDS film # 0785335; Riedseltz, Wiessembourg Canton, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France.
There is no listing for the years 1832, 1839, 1841 or 1843.
The author can only surmise from this that someone wrote to the priest or a family member, who then brought the news to the priest.
Here appears an undecipherable but short narrative that seems to say that a total of 30 people born in Riedseltz left for America in 1830, but the author counts only 29.
All the church members listed who left in 1833 arrived on the ship Charlemagne with the exception of Jacob and Catharina Heintz and family.
This is the only family not listed on the ship Charlemagne.
Listed on the passenger list as Marguerite.
Listed on the passenger list as Bastian.
Listed on the passenger list as Eve.
Listed on the passenger list at Marguerite.
Erroneously shown as Jacobina, sex female, on the ship passenger list.
1850 U.S. Census, Portage Twp., District #140, Summit County, Ohio, p. 401, line 34. Living with son, Francis (Frantz) and family. His surname is listed as Klob on the ship's passenger list.
Church baptisms for their children list their full names as Jacob Clemend Kolb and Maria Eva Seewald. Eva is actually natural mother of all of these children, because the church marriage record for this couple is dated 29 January 1798.
1850 U.S. Census, Liverpool Twp., Medina County, Ohio, p. 406, line 10, age 44.
Listed as Jean on the ship passenger list.
1850 U.S. Census, Liverpool Twp., Medina County, Ohio, p. 406, line 26. Name written as Korp, age 32.
Church records show her full baptismal name to be Maria Eva. She was the first wife of Jacob Linck/Link. married 11 August 1834 in Huron County, Ohio. (Book 1, p. 218.) Her surname was listed as Kulp on the marriage register.
1850 U.S. Census, Liverpool Twp., Medina County. Ohio, p. 406, line 31; age shown there (32) does not correspond with this birthdate. Name listed as Korp.
1850 U.S. Census, Portage Twp., District #140, Summit County, Ohio, p. 401, line 25.
1850 U.S. Census, Portage Twp., District #140, Summit County, Ohio, p. 401, line 29
Listed as Pierre Rhon on the passenger list.
Listed as Martin Banner on the passenger list.
Shown on the passenger list as Joseph Stepping. The ship captain made the error of switching Joseph for Jacob twice, once with Jacob Stoepping and again with Jacob Link.
Shown on the passenger list as Joseph Link. 1850 U.S. Census, Liverpool Twp., Medina County, Ohio, p. 406, line 19, age 35; with third wife Catharina (Buckenmeyer) and living between former brothers-in-law John and Joseph Kolb.
The passenger list has a Catherine, without surname, beneath Martin Banner (Braun), suggesting this was her surname. Since she is the only unaccompanied parishioner unaccounted for on the ship, and because she is the right age, we think she is Catharina Stall; perhaps she had married Martin.
The records list this surname as both BRAUN and BRAUNER.
This sentence was lined through, suggesting that these brothers may have changed their minds. This seems to be the case, for the head count total for the year excludes them.
The rest of the family came in 1846 according to the priest's notes.
Jagel does not appear in the church or civil records for Riedseltz, but in the church records the surname Jockel does appear.
Joseph's wife left with her brother, Peter Heintz, and son Jacob in 1846. See 1846 listing.
Johannes Buckenmeyer's wife, according to the civil and church records, was Barbara Heck. Catherina was the third wife of Jacob Link. They married about 1842.
The elder Jacob Linck/Link's wife, according to the civil and church records for Riedseltz, was Margaretha Bohn. Anna Maria is the sister of Jacob Link who arrived in 1833.
