Richard J. Gartner was born on August 29, 1928, the son of Joseph C. Gartner and Marcella Mang. He was born in the family home on Mt. Troy Road, Pittsburgh, PA. This house was built by his grandfather, August Gartner.

Dick had three brothers: Joseph, Paul and Dave - he was the youngest child in the family, seen in the photo below in the arms of his mother, Marcella.

Dick attended St. Aloysius Grade School on Mt. Troy Road. He and his brothers would walk the 3/4 mile to school every day. The school was located in three classrooms underneath the church and convent. One room had 1st and 2nd grades; one had 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades; and one had 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

Dick attended North Catholic High School on Troy Hill Road. North Catholic was located two miles from his home, and Dick either walked or rode his bike to school.

Dick graduated from high school in 1946.

Dick was in the US Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged.

Dick graduated from Carnegie Mellon Institute (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1958, and began working for US Steel right out of college.
In 1959, he was appointed industrial engineering technician, and was named industrial engineering analyst the following year. In 1964, he was promoted to industrial engineer at the steel finishing plant. In 1975, Richard was a system designer analyst in the production systems department for the Edgar Thomson-Irvin Works of US Steel. In 1980, he was promoted to senior systems designer.
Richard married Florence Letzeiter, and they had one child:
Richard died on July 13, 1988 at his home in North Hills. He is buried at North Side Cemetery.
